Has anyone heard of sugar on the kidneys? My uncle said it's very painful. Is it related to diabetes? |
In the mid-seventies, the military diagnosed my uncle with "sugar on the kidneys", a condition he said was very painful. I was wondering if anyone knew about this condition and if it is related to diabetes in any way. Thanks in advance for your help! There is no condition in the medical world called sugar on the kidneys. People in the Southern US sometimes use a similar phrase to refer to diabetes, and untreated diabetes causes the kidneys to leak and eventually fail. Its possible that the doctors detected proteins in the urine, which is a sign that diabetes has caused damage to the kidneys (from high blood sugar). i have heard of sugar in the urine but not in the kidneys. Sounds more like an antiquated term for kidney stones; definitely a painful condition, but by itself, not an indicator of diabetes. There are other tests to determine the presence of this condition. If you are worried that you have inherited diabetes , then by all means get tested. |
