Looking for someone that can help me find out information about strep infections and diabetes.? |
Husband has had a diabetec ulcer on his heel now for almost a year. Did a MRI on his foot this morning. Waiting for the results... Just wondering, what we might find out... HELP me please Hi Kathy, I am a Registered Nurse on a Vascular unit at my hospital. I see Diabetics with various uclers all the time. I would be happy to let you know what you might expect. 1. As you know, Diabetics are prone to skin breakdown on their feet and legs. They are also very difficult to heal wounds. This is why it has been there for a year. 2. Any open area of the skin is a source of infection. Staph not Strep are on many common surfaces and very commonly found on the skin. Everyone has bacteria on their skin. However, once it enters the blood it can be come an infection. 3. The MRI is looking to see if the infection has spread to the bone. I hate being the one to say this to you.... but if it has spread to the bone... your options are limited. They may admit him to the hospital and give him very strong IV antibiotics to try to heal the infection. If that doesn't work... the next step may be that they have to amputate to remove it entirely. I hope that does not scare you. Please know that if it comes to that point, there are support groups and prosthesises to help him to walk. Please let me know what happens, Good Luck to you and your husband, Angie RN Source(s): I am a vascular nurse. |
