Is there anything you can do to reduce the risk of diabetes? |
My dad has it. Lately I have been thinking more about my diet and I know my brother and I definitely have a greater chance of getting it. My diet is okay as far as food goes, but I am always drinking soda, which has a lot of sugar and bad stuff. Is there any certain foods I can eat and certain drinks I can drink to help not get it? And what should I avoid (besides sugar)? Can excercise help? And does anyone know exactly how much greater my risk is than the average person? My dad has it and I don't think anyone else in the family does. And I'm not overweight if that is a factor. Oh yea, and it is Type II, sorry I forgot to add that in earlier. Sorry about all the questions guys! Thanks so much 4 helping! =) Type II often appears in adults, and generally around age 40. Women with waistlines 36" or larger are in greater danger of developing diabetes. Remember that your pancreas can only produce so much insulin in your lifetime. If you consistantly eat a high sugar diet, you can exaughst your pancreas. You are on the right track, follow the food pyramid, keep your sugar intake moderate, and regular exercise are your best allies. Just because your father has diabetes does not mean you will get it. Keep your weight under control and exercise and you will have done what you need in order to avoid diabetes. Go to the American Diabetes Association website at: http://www.diabetes.org/about-diabetes.j... It's loaded with information and risk factors. I have a friend who recently was told she is pre-diabetic and her doctor suggested she join weight watchers and follow their core plan as it was a good healthy diet just to follow weather you are over weight or not, and by following this plan may reduce her chances of becoming a full blown diabetic. Exercise is always a good idea and I'm sure having a family history of this does increase your chances. You may want to go to your family doctor and just have a screening done of your blood sugars. yes you have the chance of getting diabetes .just maintain a proper diet.avoid eating sugar products .excecise daily.better go to check up atleast once in month!all the best For drinks, have water, diet sodas & drink mixes, coffee or tea with artifical sweetners such as splenda.Milk & cream are OK.As for food, avoid take out.Eat Fish,Chicken,Turkey, roast beef, bacon eggs & WHOLE GRAIN breads only and limit yourself to one slice per meal with butter.
