Is hypoglecimia/hyperglycemia, the same thing as diabetes?

Hyperglycemia is high glucose and hypoglycemia is low glucose. Both are associated with diabetes. However, someone can become hypoglycemic without having diabetes. Chances are , down the road that person will develop diabetes. I have battled with hypoglycemia for years as does my 14 year old daughter.

Hypoglycemia is the body's inability to properly handle large amounts of sugar -or-- the oversecretion of insulin by the pancreas in response to a rapid rise in blood sugar or "glucose". In hypoglycemia, the pancreas sends out too much insulin and the blood sugar plummets below the level necessary to maintain well-being.

Hyperglycemia happens from time to time to all people who have diabetes. High blood glucose happens when the body has too little, or not enough, insulin or when the body can't use insulin properly.

Hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia occur in diabetics, but also occur in other conditions. This is esp. true for hypoglycemia for alcoholics, or hyperglycemia in pregnancy.
