Why does having a severe mental illness increase the risk of diabetes?

also in this catagory what do they class as a severe mantal health problem?

http://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diab...

this is part of what I am reading

unfortunately a lot of the drugs that help schizophrenia or bipolar or depression cause both weight gain and a decrease in insulin production....

it is hard to lose weight on these antipsychotics or antidepressants.....

one can develop a syndrome known as metabolic syndrome which can include diabetes, weight gain, and decreased insulin production.. it also causes fat to be gained around the middle....the stomach area...making it more dangerous than fat gained elsewhere....

i have schizoaffective disorder...am on antipsychotics and have to have my blood tested all the time to make sure i am not diabetic....
Severe mental illness does not increase your risk of diabetes no matter what you are reading. It is just one study or one opinion but is not true from what I have seen in all my years of nursing.
From what I learned, it's not the mental illness that increases the risk. It's the side effects of the medication.
My hypothesis is that people with major depression may perhaps eat more and consume sugary, fatty foods, (many people eat junk food to feel better,) which then can lead to diabetes. There's your link right there.
there are a lot of studies showing correlations, but none that know why. some could be due to the type of medication you are prescribed as some increase the risk for diabetes
Diabetes and mental illness have no link whatsoever. Don't believe everything that you read. Diabetes is an affliction that involves insulin-producing cells in your pancreas. It has nothing to do with mental health.
