Is the Atkins Diet supposed to be good (healthier at all?) for people with diabetes? |
Is the Atkins Diet supposed to be good (healthier at all?) for people with diabetes? Not really people with diabetes needs a very balanced diet and cutting out so many carbs can really hurt them.. The best thing for a diabetic person to do is follow the diet plan the doctor gives them. Since there are different levels of diabetes some would need more or less carbs. One thing that I have read lately is pumpkin extract is really good at controlling insulin and blood sugar levels so eat more pumpkin! Theoretically, the Atkins diet will help you, because it is low in carbohydrates, which require insulin. Some have even claimed that a low carb eating plan has put their type 2 diabetes under control. Good luck with your condition and I hope you get better. Once you understand how to do the diet and not do it through heresay it is healthy and it will fight diabetes. It will strengthen your body in other things. I have been doing this diet for 4 years now. I do it for health reasons plus, the best foods are in a low carb diet. I just finished a bowl of pecans and blueberries with milk. Better than Special K. Most definitely. I normalized my blood sugar WITHOUT medication by going on a variation of the Atkins diet. (Basically just a high protein no carb thing.) It's because carbohydrates are broken down by your body into pure glucose (sugar) which makes it bad for people who have blood sugar control issues or glucose intolerance. Veggies are still good because they're nutritious and don't have the starch that is turned to sugar, but most everything else (bread, rice, sweets, grains, etc.) are the worst possible things to eat for a diabetic, because their body can't tolerate the insulin spikes that result from eating the stuff. Atkins diet (or something like it) is the way to go for a diabetic. I follow a variation of an Atkins and Bernstein diet. I hate the word diet for some reason. Remember it is a lifestyle change. I think Atkins and Bernstein followers are a bit too hardcore for my taste. I basically came up with my own variation. I will say that most diabetics will see better BG readings going low carb. I do suggest you read both books by Dr. Atkins and Dr. Bernstein to understand micro and macro nutrients. Good luck. I'm a Pharm.D Atkins diet can help you. You must not stay on the induction forever. There are steps like 1,2,3, and 4. Read more about it. I am thinking of going back on it. I did lose 40 lbs and my blood sugars were back to normal levels. |
