What are the chances of me having diabetes?

im really really scared right now....i am 14 and my father has diabetes and so did his brothers and sister and his parents. but no one at all has had diabetes on my mom's side. im about 5'4, and weigh 130 pounds. what do you think is the percent chance im going to have diabetes?? im really scared, is there a way for me to avoid it? too late perhaps??

^Fist of all stop worrying, stressing out won't help.

Your young and if you follow a healthy eating plan and exercise, there is a good possibility you won't get diabetes.

This is the basis for a healthy eating plan, whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables, lean meat and poultry. Stay away from the white stuff as much as possible, sugar, white bread, white potatoes, white flour, white rice etc. Limit fast food and junk food. The less processed and closer to nature the food the better. Whole grain breads, whole grain wheat flour, brown rice and sweet potatoes are healthier choices.
Good luck, I hope this helps.
well, lets look at the circumstances. if it is type one diabetes, then sure, it can be passed on from generation to generation. but some people, like me, have no history of it in their family they know of and end up with it. type 1 diabetes is not a lifestyle disese. check with your doctor if you are generally feeling tired, get thirsty easily and need to urinate often as you may have it as type 1 is usually diagnosed in young people

type 2 diabetes is similar but not really. it too can be passed on from generation to generation. it is a lifestyle disese and is generally seen only in older people. you dont seem to be morbidly obese so you wont be getting it anytime soon at your age (type2 that is) but as you go through your life you need to eat well, exercise and get regular checkups with your doctor.

hope that helps. any questions just email me. feel free to if you want!!
Reducing or eliminating the chances of getting type 2 diabetes is a matter of educating one's self and adopting a healthy lifestyle. Read more here:

There's possibilty of you developing Diabetes later in life. It's really hard to say that you could develope Diabetes later but there's a chance that you might.
Watch your weight, exercise and your diet and always tell your health care provider your family history. Not everyone who has a family history gets it. My cousin was recently Dx and we have no family history, so yes, you can avoid it although you will always be at risk for it
It depends on if it is child onset (type 1) or adult onset (type 2). If they all have type 2 than there is a lot you can do to try to keep yourself healty, eat good food, exercise, etc. If it's type 1 than you may or may not get it and there isn't anything you can do to prevent it. Either way, take care of your self and stay healthy and your prognosis whether you get diabetes or not will be much better. This is something you can live a long time with as long as you are smart and keep healthy.
