Question to those with experience with "dry eye" in dogs.?

I'm considering adopting a dog from a shelter. He is healthy excpet for having dry eye. One eye had red in it and the other had crust underneath it. He's a 4 year old german shorthaired pointer that was found as a stray, but looked like he had lived with people before.

I've looked up some information about dry eye, but was hoping someone with experience with it can give me more information. For example, how often does the dog have to be treated, is it expensive, how often do you have to visit the vet, etc. Thanks in advance for your help.

A friend of mine's dog had dry eye. Its a continual process of putting in eyedrops every few hours. Eventually, my friend decided to have a surgery done where they re-route a salivary gland to the eye - it was expensive but worked well (we all laughed because she would "cry" and her eye would water when she drooled for cookies).

I would NOT assume the shelter has any real clue what the eye issue is... unless, of course, they've brought him to a veterinary ophthalmologist.

Ask a vet to be sure. Please don't let that stop you from giving the dog a second chance.
God Bless <3
