Help! I have red dry eyes from all of the hot dry weather my area has been having...? |
Is there anything anybody can reccomend to me OTC-or elsewhere that can help. I have already tried "dry eyes" eye drops. It's so embarrasing. Assuming the problem is just dry eyes and nothing serious, here's what I would recommend as a pharmacy student. If you're going to be using the eye drops for a while, don't use eye drops made for allergies. Like someone else said, the allergy eye drops work by constricting the blood vessels (capillaries) in your eyes. This is not a good thing in the long run. Also, your body eventually adapts to it, making your eyes even more congested and reddened when you don't use the eye drops. What I would suggest is using a eye drop solution made for dry eyes. These eye drops are usually called "artificial tears". Also, if your eyes are sensitive to chemicals or you're planning on using them long-term, make sure the eye drops are preservative-free. Check with the pharmacist on choosing a product. If the artificial tears don't work, you can move up to ophthalmic ointment-- however, since it's thicker, it may cause some blurry vision. I would use a non-medicated, preservative-free ophthalmic ointment. These are generally available in a small tube packaged within a small box (see example below). Check for it at your local pharmacy. If you're unsure about how to apply the ointment, read the link below or check with the pharmacist. One important note is to not let the tip of the ointment tube touch anything, including your eyes. This will help prevent contamination of the ointment. Feel free to contact me if you need any more help. Source(s): How to apply ophthalmic ointment: http://chealth.canoe.ca/channel_section_... Example of ophthalmic ointment: http://www.fougera.com/products/product_... try benadryl allergy yeah right, stoner girl- try any of the "allergy" eye-drops, (Murine, etc) they soothe as well as constrict the cappillaries If none of the above suggestions work and it's worsening... you "could" have conjunctivitis, then you'd need to see a doctor. There are other things you could get like infections, foreign object in eye, yadda yadda, so if it's not better soon, call your doctor just to be safe. You only have one set of eyes! |
