What is good treatment for cronic severe dry eyes? |
They hurt so bad!! Has anyone ever tried the nutritional suppliments for dry eyes, such as the omega-3's? I just want to know if they are worth buying. I am desperate though because they hurt so bad since we got our cold snap outside!! The air is too dry!! I remember reading about a supplement some months ago that helps with dry secretion conditions including dry eyes, dry vaginal secretions, etc. This is Seabucktorn Oil - a rich source of Omega 7. Plus it also contains Omega 3 ND Omega 9. The sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is a berry that grows in coastal areas. Omega 7, a rare fatty acid in the plant kingdom is not widely talked about compared to the other Omegas such as Omega 3. But it is vital for the health of the secretory organs, including the mucous membranes. Another rich source of Omega 7 is Macadamia Nut Oil. It is worth trying either or both of these as a health supplement for your condition. You can also buy artificial tears from your pharmacy. These offer much relief to those with dry eye conditions. I would go to your pharmacy as soon as you can to get some artificial tears and use as recommended by the pharmacist or on the leaflet. Also get some Sea Buckthorn Oil capsules (eg Nordic) and/or Macadamia Nut Oil from your supermarket if you can find it. If you live in the UK you can find this at Asda. In the US Walmart will probably sell it. I think the UK oil is sourced from Australia (the original source of Macadamia Nut Oil) wheras the US source might be Hawaiian). Have you seen a medical doctor about your dry eyes, as it can often go hand in hand with some underlying medical condition. Please get this checked out if you haven't done so already. Good luck and best wishes. I hope you get relief soon. Take care. I haven't ever rec. supplements b/c there isn't a good study to prove there effectiveness. You can get punctal plugs to help keep the tears on the eyes longer. Use lubricating ointment at bedtime and use preservative-free artificial tears when needed during the day. There also is a prescription drop called restasis that is the only drop that produced more tears. |
