Should I take my daughter to the doctor for an eating disorder? |
My daughter, Breanna is 13 years old and has been mentioning a lot of things about her weight lately. I know that she has been on a diet for a couple months, even though I told her not to. Breanna was never chubby, never passed 130 pounds and she is an athletic, 5'5'' 8th grader. I'm a recovering bulimic, and she sounds exactly like I was. Drinking diet soda in large amounts is a huge indicator of an eating disorder (it helps the food come up much easier and faster.) Her eating a lot while you go out, and then more when you get home, is indicative of bulimia as well... if she's throwing it up, she's still going to be starving because the food doesnt' stay. My friends used to be amazed that I could put away a full restaurant meal, then come home and eat more. They didn't know I was vomiting it all up. I'm no doctor, obviously, but based on what you're saying that's what it sounds like. yes!!!!!!! shes gonna end up killing herself and at 130 pounds and athletic, she was all muscle! You should definitely take her to a doctor. The thing with eating disorders is that whoever has them becomes very good at hiding them and making it look like everything is okay. You need to catch this now. It should be obvious that probably the only thing she is eating most of the time is diet soda. The "other times" you speak of are the times she uses to throw you off. She is probably purging when she gets home. Please have her checked. I think you should cause if she does have an eating disorder she needs to know how bad it will hurt her and if you can get her help sooner than lately it's likely that she will work through it faster. Good luck and take care. Yes, take her to the doctor. She is doing damage to her body invisible from the outside. Also she should go to a psychologist. Take her to a doctor immediately. If she keeps up with her eating disorder, her life could be in danger. i would take her to the doctors it sounds like to me that she is now underweight and may be anorexic Don't take her too a Doctor, she'll feel alienated. Sit her down and ask her, non accusingly. I have issues with my weight and I'm 14, if my mum took me too a Doctor before even talking to me I'd be angry at her for being rash and I'd be upset she felt she couldnt talk to me. Ask her how she is, tell her she can open up to you and it's okay to be insecure and feel upset sometimes. It sounds to me like your too enthusiastic to lable her 'Anorexic' or tell her she is 'Sick' or has mental problems, she's still your daughter and you should talk to her first. If she is defensive and won't open up THEN take her to a doctor, but trust me if you start waving conditions in her face and telling her she isn't normal it will only make her worse. I wish you the best. Please Please Please take the young lady to an endocrinologist...they can usually tell, through hormone levels in the body, if atypical weight loss like this is being caused through self-starvation. Other symptoms of eating disorders include thinning hair, purple nails, being cold all of the time, excessive dieting, antisocial behavior, and low heart rates (i.e the 30's and low 40's). EATING DISORDERS CAN KILL!!!! Most importantly TALK to your daughter about these feelings you and your husband are experiencing and get to know how she is feeling about herself right now (i.e. self conscious, confident, diffident, etc.) and what is going on in her life. This behavior could be a VERY negative reaction to an event that could be solved through a mother's guidance and advice, as well as love. i was anorexic myself..of course they never took me to the doctor...but with the help of friends telling me that i look fine..i finally got over it...over 3 long years of being anorexic..maybe it would help her more..but sometimes going to the doctor would make it worse |
