Can I buy A gun If I was hospitalized for an eating disorder? years ago?

I was hospitalized when I was 16 for an eating disorder as a teen years ago and now I would like to purchase a gun for home protection ( I am 20). Will I have that counted agaist me? Do I have to put that down on the paper work they give you before they can sell you the rifle? I am in michigan. Thanks

An eating disorder is not a felony and it doesnt technically classify you a mentally unstable to own a gun. So if you are of age and you want to buy a gun, go for it!

Hope this helps

In MI you have to be 21 to purchase a handgun. I don't believe it would be a problem when you were hospitalized. The Michigan State Police has a lot of firearms info at thier website. I know if you were diagnosed with a condition where you cannot distinguish reality from non-reality, you will not be able to get a gun. An eating disorder though, shouldn't be a problem

I hope not, I'm in treatment for an anxiety disorder and I have lots of guns.

No that will not go against you. Just answer the questions on the background check honestly. They are simple yes and no questions. If I was going to buy a gun for home protection at your age I would purchase a shotgun not a rifle. With a 12 gauge or less recoil a 20 gauge you don't have to be very accurate you can bascially point the shotgun at your target. With a rifle you have to take a very good aim and if you are nervous and scared you will have a hard time taking careful aim. 20 gauge 3 in Magnum #4 or #6 will do the damage to someone who invades your home.

just don't tell,it only is held against you it a judge finds you to be mentally unstable...eating disorders are not the same thing as schizophrenia

Unless your eating disorder resulted in you being convicted of a felony then its perfecty legal for you to buy a firearm.

An eating disorder is not going to disqualify for you permit. You do have to be 21 to purchase handgun ammunition almost everywhere. Some states and cities have additional restrictions. Check with the local Sheriff's Office or the State Police to be certain.

The following is from the State Laws.

No it will not count against you.

Being sick is no crime.

For the guy thats said you have to be 21 to buy handguns, i guess he didnt read the question, it says a rifle. I wouldnt think so, they only reason they dont sell guns is if you have commited an violent crime. If you beat youer husband/wife, stabbed somebody, threatened sombody and go arrested-thats the things they wont sell you a gun for.

There isn't any question on the paper that asks if you have ever had an eating disorder so I think you'll be fine.
