Will having an eating disorder, stop me from becoming a social worker, or other profession in the care field? |
Obviously i wouldnt go into that type of work until i am in recovery...but after that, would it make a difference? It definitely will not....I was diagnosed with an eating disorder for the best part of my life and I am now working as a psychologist.....employers appreciate the fact that you can relate to the experience and there is also the disability discrimination act, which means that they cannot legally be prejudice...although there are legal exceptions ie the army.. Have you ever thought about working in an eating disorder rehab facility? I think suffering from an treatable disease, illness, disability, makes a better social service professional. You can relate better to your clients, as long as you are recovered. You can't be sick and think you can have all the energy to care for others. I absolutely think you can do anything you want in the field. Conquering it makes you stronger.. How much longer do you plan on keeping up this behaviour? You may not survive if you don't stop and get yourself to hospital or therapy straightaway. If you're doing it for the sake of experience, just to be able to reference your own struggle when trying to help them with their own, that does not hold much logical value. If you want to be in that field, why would you be doing the exact opposite of what your future patients would be doing? Doesn't that make you a bit of a hypocrite? Not at all. What you must remember if you do enter this kind of profession you must never tell the person you are talking to that you understand because you have been down the same path yourself. This is a no no when it comes to counselling which would be part of a social work role etc. Not unless you go around telling people, that you have a eating disorder, when you go for a job people are not interested in what you eat, it is how good you can do the job they want you for,so don't worry about it just think about doing a good job. If anything, it might make you a better counselor because you will have empathy for other people with problems. I don't think it would stop you if you were successful in your recovery. And I hope you get into recovery very soon if you aren't already. I agree with Sharon M. It would probably make you a better in that field, but not until you are in recovery. You should try to overcome your disorder before you take on a new career. Good luck! I doubt very much that it would stop you, most of the social workers i have met all seem to have a problem of some kind or other. I think it would give you a better insight as to the problems people face. It might make you better at your job. |

Nope, it isn't a disorder. It's just a sign that your appetite is out of control. Or in some cases a sign that you have emotional issues (sometimes we overeat due to stress or depression)...
