Can you have a gastric band if you have an eating disorder?

I suffer from binge eating disorder and I am on the waiting list for treatment, however I am going to need to wait at least a year before I get treatment. I used to suffer from anorexia/bulimia and now things have gone from one extreme to another.

Does anyone know if they would be willing to give me a gastric band given my condition? Is there any point in speaking to my doctor about it?

If they won't give me one then I don't know what i'll do. We have worked out that I am putting on around 7lbs a month, so by the time I see the see psychiatrist (sp?) in a year, I'll have put on 84lbs. I don't know what I am meant to do in the mean time. Can anyone help me?

Before you have any bariatric surgery, you have to have a few sessions with a psychologist. They do this to ensure that you are willing and able to make the life changes necessary to ensure the success of the surgery's purpose.

I would definitely talk to your doctor about this. You need to make sure that you have all the help and support needed for a positive outcome. You are putting your own life at risk if you binge after the surgery. I'm talking about deadly consequences....overexpansion of the pouch above the band can lead to perforation which will then lead to sepsis and possible death following.

It is a serious life changing surgery that requires extraordinary commitment.

You should be treated for your disorder first. Any weight loss surgery is such a dramatic and difficult journey, you don't need the added pressure of an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia. Anyone needing this surgery has an eating disorder but most of us just have problems with eating too much and consuming too many calories, etc.

I wish you luck.

You cannot undergo ANY diet programs when you have an eating disorder, do you realize how much damage you will inflict on yourself trying to be binge when your wearing a gastric band? Your stomach will be much smaller, but the psychological urges to eat WILL be there.

do speak to your doctor, he/she will likely ask you to speak to a psychiatrist as as you know, gastric bands will just make you feel fuller earlier, not stop you wanting to eat for emotional reasons.

I'm not sure if they wouldn't do it just because you have an eating disorder. But then again I'm not a doctor. All I know is that you have to be at least like 100 pounds overweight to do it.

they will not preform any form of surgery until you are treated sucessfully for your disorder
