Do I have Pica (Eating Disorder)?

I tend to crave soap foam and when I'm taking a shower I need to put it in my mouth. I do not swallow it though. I know that people with Pica actually eat chunks of soap but I never heard of people that "tries" the foam. To me, the foam is irresistible. I love its taste but I don't like the actual soap. Is this conduct consider as Pica?

Well, I have been 'tasting soap foam' for at least 5 years. When I smell any soap or think about soap, literally my mouth waters. I am 26 years old and I have never been pregnant. My eating habits are not the best so it could be possible that I'm lacking something. I guess I will need to go and see a doctor.

Any disorder can vary. Not everyone with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder will wash their hands 100,000 times a day, they each have their own vices. Whether it is mild or extreme is all up to your doctor, but to me it sounds like a mild case of Pica.
-Also, if you were to try the foam, I assume you havent had it before, but if you know what it tastes like, and you crave it, I would definitely call it Pica, not just a craving.

I guess it depends how often you have this craving. Pica is a medical disorder characterized by an appetite for largely non-nutritive substances, like coal, soil, chalk, or paper (though soap foam could definitely apply!). In order for these actions to be considered pica, they must persist for more than one month. It is associated with iron deficiency, and has been seen in children and pregnant women.

Several behavioural-based treatments are listed in the ref below. If this is a continuous tendency, you may want to see your doctor to see if you have a mineral deficiency.

Technically yes. Pica is any abnormal craving for non-food items, and that would include soap foam. Folks with Pica eat all sorts of odd stuff, and although I haven't heard of soap foam- it would fit the bill if you feel compelled to eat it. Eating soap bubbles is natural enough in the kiddie set- so I suppose it may just be a holdover from that. It won't necessarily hurt you any- but if it bugs you, just ask the doc. There are medications to help control the urges, but I doubt you'd be a candidate for that- as soap bubbles aren't harmful, as would be say, wood shavings or dirt.

Pica is a medical disorder characterized by an appetite for largely non-nutritive substances (e.g., coal, soil, feces, chalk, paper, etc.) or an abnormal appetite for some things that may be considered foods, such as food ingredients (e.g., flour, raw potato, starch). In order for these actions to be considered pica, they must persist for more than one month, at an age where eating such objects is considered developmentally inappropriate. Pica is seen in all ages, particularly in pregnant women and small children, especially among children who are developmentally disabled, where it is the most common eating disorder.

No probably not, plus consider how old you are because pica usually usually only occurs in young children from the ages of 1-5 and pregnant women, although it can occur in individuals who are lacking in some nutrient or another. So you should also consider asking yourself if you have a healthy diet. Anyways my personal opinion is no, you don't have pica.

It could be. Especially since you have a craving for it. When I was pregnant I ate sand, and chalk then substituted it with cornstarch. I don't have any cravings for sand any more, but I have to admit, when someone is clapping chalkboard erasers I do like to be in that cloud.

Try talking a multi-vitamin if you don't already and see if that helps.

Pica is a disorder where you will eat something (anything) that is not edible - such as paint chips, paper clips. since you do not really swallow it - i dont think you actually have it. it has been indicated that pica is linked to an iron defieciency in pregnant women.

I doubt you have Pica.....but it is possible! How long has this been going on? More than a month could be Pica. I used to crave the foam from toothepaste when I was pregnant. I would go to the doctor and describe your concerns....even have your iron checked because when you are craving something it usually means your lacking something...I would guess iron!

If you believe you may have a real psychological condition, then you should seek the advice of a well qualified professional. Some soap foam may be toxic and ingesting it may make you sick.

Well it does sound like a sort of Pica, but to be sure, Consult your doctor, and if you do not want to consult him, try chewing some gum or have something in your mouth while you take a shower.

If it's foam you crave, there are a lot of substitutes. Like carbonated drinks. But if it's the soap you crave, but in that form, than I would consider it an eating disorder.

Get a general physical with blood and urine tests. Pica sufferers are sometimes anemic (low on iron).

Whether its pica or not something is wrong and i would highly consider visiting your doctor.

if you don't swallow the foam then no you don't have pica

eat something that has the same texture have you gone to the doctor to seee or did he name t he proble already ?

My mother had pica when she was pregnant and ate cardboard and coffee grounds.
