Eating disorder & counselling???

Eh, hi i was wodering what an ed counsellor would ask you in you 1st meeting with them?
Also they can't force you to see a psychiatrist can they? or force you to go to a rehabilitation centre if you don't want to.
Also if you're not a minor, they won't involve your parents will they???

Thanks!!

As far as questions, well it really depends on the particular therapist. Normally a therapist likes to get to know their patients first to establish trust... so it really depends.

All ethical considerations will be taken into account prior to and during the counseling sessions. Some doctors can mandate a hospital stay or they can mandate when they deem it necessary to commit a person (especially if its a life or death situation)... but as far as seeing a psychiatrist...that would be up to the individual. If you are not a minor, they will only need your informed consent...

If you are suffering from an eating disorder, it's important to seek help...don't be afraid of what it will be like...just concentrate on figuring out why the eating disorder began and then concentrate on getting better! Good luck hon!

counselor or therapist? Or more of the same thing?
therapists ask different questions, I'm guessing, I've only ever been to the therapist.

It depends how underweight you are if they want to send you somewhere and if you are not a minor, they wouldnt tell your parents. They probably wouldnt force you to see a psychiatrist, but it all just really depends on your condition.

Just be glad that you are not a minor and they cannot Baker Act you.

Firstly, they will ask you about your childhood. How it was, were your parents strict etc. Then they will ask you about habbits. This is to see if you have OCD (obsessive compulsive dissorder) which is common in eating disorder hosts. They will ask you how school was or is for you.
Then you will probably be taken to see a dietitian. She or he will ask you what you would eat on a normal day and ask you questions like "how often do you drink milk?" or ask you if there are certain foods to abstain from eating.

It will be your decision if you want your parents involved. They will most definitely advise you to have them involved.

This was probably the worst experience of my life. I am 14 and I suffered from anorexia for about 2 years and was in an eating disorder clinic for 1 1/2 years. This is what they asked me and talked about. I hated my nutritionist because she was obeise and frankly I thought she was being hypocritical for telling me what to eat and what amount when she herself wasn't healthy either. She was the one who taught me to count calories because the first time I went there she informed me that I was consuming 700 calories. So from that point I began cutting down.

The only reason I'm not anorexic now and won't ever be again is so that I am not put in a situation like that where I have to deal with those kinds of people. I could be wrong because perhaps every counselling and clinic is different, but speaking on my behalf, that was the worst experience ever!

I advice you to get a psychiatrist outside of the counselling, where they actually talk about other things other than your eating disorder. This illness didn't just come to you for the obsessiveness of being skinny, thats just a part of it, it happened for a reason. Something triggered that in you, so you have to find what it is and resolve it before it gets worse, and it will get worse if nothing is done.

I hope you find what works for you. I understand exactly how you feel. Remember that you're not the only one out there with this problem and keep having faith that this will be resolved. If you ever get suicidal thought or anything like that, write in a journal everything that is going on inside of you. The next time you read that, you will notice how silly it was and that you still have hope.

Goodluck!
