I don't see why people assume cutting/eating disorders imply the person is in need of a doctor? |
I mean, everytime someone puts up a question regarding anorexia or cutting, everyone's answer is "you need HELP! SERIOUS help. see a doctor!" I just wanted to say I appreciate none of you saying something rude or sarcastic. Don't worry about offending anyone. You'r alloud to have your own opinion. Both cutting and eating disorders are harmful to your body- physically and psychologically. They go much deeper than you imply. Cutting and eating disorders are externally, self-mutiliating behavior. Mentally, they are control issues. In other words, the person feels out of control of life, and looks towards their body - their own means of control - to do what they choose. People who do that, are usually having a problem or stress in there personal life, or have very low self confidence, and talking to a therapist can help, but sometimes it's just like a phase and you get over it yourself, yeah people do go overboard at times when they see somebody cutting themselves or anything like that. Both are very self-destructive behaviors. They are violent and immediate. They are internalizing anger instead of placing it where it belongs. They are blaming yourself for things not yours to blame. I hope you find your way to understanding that. Basically, mental healthcare is considered desperately needed if a person is a threat or harm to himself or others. It is because this harms the person mentally and physically. It is hazardous to their health and is deadly. Oh yes they do. Both are potentially deadly and neither solves problems. Honestly I have been down both paths and am still dealing with the eating disorder as well. I did not see a doctor for cutting but decided on my own that it was not something I wanted to let everyone in the world know that I did. I was embarrassed by it and I stopped but still think about it every once in a while when something sets me off. And not everyone who starts smoking has a hard time stopping but people are different. People with those disorders have a mental disorder, whether that person sees themselves as "disturbed" or not. It's a compulsive behavior and cutting especially can lead to things like infection, and well anorexia immediately causes malnutrition and eventually death. I think most people freak out about it because a lot of cutters do have an actual problem at the root of their behaviors, though many might not, and anorexia is something that IS serious, I mean are you kidding me? You don't toy with what goes into your body, that can **** up a lot of internal stuff, organs will be screwed, so forth if you are malnourished. Why not see a doctor and nip that disorder in the bud right there? Well, you did what you did for a reason. You may not see it, or understand it yourself. The people that tell you to see a doctor don't understand it either. Cutting can cause you health problems (infections, etc...) and of course eating disorders can cause health problems. Those are really hard things to get over and sometimes it just helps to talk to someone. The people that tell you to see a doctor, think that it's the right thing to do, because they don't really know what to do. Because people dont really understand what it is like, unless they have been there themselves. for some people, yes, it is necessary to go and talk to a doctor and whatever, but for others, we do better treating ourselves and getting over our problems ourselves. i was a cutter for 5 years and im slowly getting over it by myself *clean for 7 months!*. i think it gives u more of a sense of accomplishment if you get over something on your own, but sometimes, it is necessary to get help. but i know exactly what u mean when i read those posts. It's a dangerous coping mechanism, well, both are. So many cutters wind up killing themselves by accident, cutting too deep. |
