Becoming an eating disorder therapist?

I want to become an eating disorder therapist and have my own practice.

What kind of schooling would I have to go through to achieve this?

please be specific--there are so many different options when I'm looking up options (social work, therapist, clinical therapy, etc)

You will need a minimum of a MA in a clinical area that is eligible for licensure in your state (each state is different.

The MSW - leads to the LCSW
MA in psych, counseling or MFT can lead to either the LMFT or the LPC.

A license can only be achieved after the Masters and 2-3K hours of supervision.

The PsyD or PhD in psych is the final route - it leads to a bit more prestige and options.

DA

In order to be a therapist who deals with eating disorders you need to be a clinician. You have to decide how far you want to go in school, You can become a clinician with a master's degree in clinical social work or psychiatric social work. You can do it with a PH. D becoming a psychologist or do with a medical degree and becoming a psychiatrist. It depends on you and how much time and energy you want to put into school. But what ever way you decide to go you'll have to become a clinician with one of the degrees in clinical work.

I'd say clinical therapy because it's a good overview that you then have a lot of freedom within. If you get a masters degree, you will be the second in command and need a supervisor most likely to run your own practice. Go for a doctorate (PsyD or PhD) if you dream of running your own practice. That's an additional 4 years + beyond undergrad.
