Please help, my friend has an eating disorder?

One of my best friends is bulemic (sp?)

It started off as anorexia, and she would refuse to eat anything, and sometimes would pass out. Now, on the rare occasion she does eat, she makes herself throw up.

Me and the rest of my friends have tried to help her, but she just gets moody and says we are lecturing her.

This all started when she started liking this older guy (He's sixth form) and she was convinced he didnt like her because she was fat.

Shes 13, and not that fat, its just like puppy fat. But she refuses to listen. Is there anyone here who can help me?????

Please, i'm desperate.

Bulimia is where you eat a lot of food at one time (binge) then have feelings of guilt, self hatred and lack of control, so you attempt to get rid of the food (purging). This can be through making yourself sick, exercising excessively, taking laxitives...

Anorexia is where the sufferer has an intense "fear" of gaining weight. They will do anything to prevent themselves from putting weight on, and more times than not, they are never happy with their size and want to be slimmer. Of course you can be a mixture of the two, doing both at the same time, but it sounds to me like your friend has anorexia with purging symptoms.

Eating disorders are more than just not wanting to be fat, or wanting to be thin. Everyone wants to be thin, but what makes a person with an eating disorder different? The answer is the feelings that come with an ED. Self hate, confusion, lack of control, low self esteem, depression, mood swings... The list goes on. If you are afraid of what she is doing to her body, you'll be terrified at what's going through her head.

Sweetness, you need to tell her parents and get het to a medical professional asap. Any eating disorder is a terrible, awful thing to have, and at 13 she has a very good chance of a full recovery and having a healthy relationship with herself and food. She will not be able to do this on her own, she will get worse and worse until it becomes like an addiction, not unsimilar to a drug addiction.

There will be so many lies, lies will be instinctive to her. She feels fine, she is ok, she's already eaten, she's not well, she's really ok.... And she will hate you if you tell her parents about her ED because her secret, her own little bit of control has been lost all thanks to you.

But you really need to tell someone about it on her behalf, she will not want or ask for help herself. Maybe, if you are good friends and you know her parents, tell her parents. If not, tell a teacher who teaches both you and your friend, one you can trust to take it seriously. Too many people don't think it is serious, and believe me, it is.

If you tell her to her face that you think she has an ED, she will lie. She probably doesn't think that there is anything wrong with what she is doing.

Best thing you can do for yourself is arm yourself with as much info about eating disorders as possible, so you know what she is going through. Youtube anorexia or bulimia and watch videos, read as much as you can.

I cannot stress enough to you to tell someone who can get her help. Don't blab around the school or friends or whatever, that will only prove to her that she is right, make her draw into herself and away from her friends and it will make her worse.

Get her some help. She will need it.

Good luck and my very best wishes.

It's still anorexia, but it's gotten more severe. I'm a recovering anorexic; you HAVE to tell a parent about it. It's the only way you can all get her to at least listen to you - she needs to go to a doctor.
