Why do people get Eating Disorders?

Why do we get eating disorders?
There is no one cause, yet. So here we will introduce a few theories.

"I don't want to grow up - I want to be a child again."
In this theory, it is thought that the patient, who wants hide away from their troubles, begins to want to become a child again. The patient tries to make his/her wish come true by becoming smaller, or in other words, dieting. In this theory, the bulimic patient is thought to eat too much from stress, and purges to make up for it to reach their ultimate goal as listed above.

"I don't want to grow up - I don't want to become (physically) feminine."
In the days when eating disorders were though to be a disease particular to females, this was the most popular theory. In this theory, the patient is thought to have begun dieting to get rid of their newly acquired fat on their breasts and hips. Though there are still patients that admit that they wish to "be rid of their breasts and hips", this theory is no longer thought of as the main reason.

"I don't want to be fat - I want to be thin."
Though it is a quite natural wish these days, in this theory, the patient carries the diet on too far. (see diet high)

"I hate my body. (or a certain part of it)"
In this theory, the patient begins dieting to get rid of the parts they "hate". (resulting in an eating disorder)

"I'm stressed out."
In this theory, the patient does not diet. S/he eats less due to exam troubles, loss of love, or stomach problems. After a while, s/he begins to believe that not eating will help release his/her stress, until s/he becomes, "addicted to not eating". (see diet high)

Now, it is thought that the reason a certain individual gets an eating disorder is a combination of one or more of the theories listed above (there are others), the personality* of the certain individual, some biological factors, the family environment, and the tendency (of society) to favor being thin.

personality*
little self-assertion, low self-esteem, serious, etc.

We will also introduce some ways that eating disorders are treated.

The family environment
In the case where it is thought that the patient developed the eating disorder due to lack of pampering while growing up, the idea is to let the patient be re-spoilt. In the case where it is thought that the patient developed the eating disorder because s/he was unable to be in control except in what s/he ate, the idea is to make the patient more independent.

Re-learn good eating habits
This is thought to be especially effective for patients who did not develop into an eating disorder from a diet.

There are other ways to treat patients but these two are the ones that No More Time thought were the easiest to understand.

Its the medias fault because all they show on TV is the skinny women. The dont show the everyday woman that you see walking down the street so all young girls see is the skinny woman who have personnel trainers who walk around hungry, This makes young girls think that if they dont look like this false image of beauty that the media portrays they think something is wrong.

Because of this unrealistic view of beauty young girls have self esteem issues because there bodies dont look like what is portrayed on TV. Then the fact that many of those that are on TV appear to not have any flaws because they have had surgercal procedures or use make to cover there flaws.

What they dont realize is that the imprefections are what makes you who you are and that we all are not supposed to look alike.

The problem is that more pronounced in young girls but boys are also affected to a smaller degree.

I think young people who have been made fun of, want to be popular, or are popular have them because they don't want to be made fun of, they want to be with the pretty girls/guys, and they want to continue to be one.

But I don't because...well, not to sound full of myself but I am pretty, so I'm usually not made fun of, I don't want to be popular, and I'm not under the pressure of being popular.

And why are you in school? It's summer :O

Well with sites about anorexia glamourising the lifestyle of eating disorders is hard not to want to emulate what we say. When i was in school the idea of being someone with an eating disorder was cool. all the girls wanted to be percieved as being niche. and not eating anything. it was a fad if you like. Yes we knew it was bad for us but like smoking drinking and drugs we saw it as a way to make our lives more interesting
just like to add none of us felt "fat" we didnt fel we were fat in relation to people like mary kate. its and addictive way of life and gives self control to girls at a time when all their decisions seem to be made for them by parents and school

worries about weight, shape and food is a common problem for young people especially teenage girls.. obesity is the common cause.. but sometimes even not obese girls wants to be thinner.. they often want to loose weight,, do some exercise and sometimes skip meals... some causes also are emotional and psychological.. we all know that during teenage life, a lot of changes occur that sometimes a young mind could not handle.. all the physical changes and emotional changes plus peer pressure and the need of belongingness combined.

I wouldnt really say I have an eating disorder but Im pretty obsesed with my body and making it look good.
Im 14 I weight 102 and Im 5'1 I think.
That still isnt good enough for mee.
My goal weight would be in the low 90's.
But I think that its because of what someone thinks "perfect" is and I think perfect is being skinny.
I dont think its so much of models and famous people being skinny, well at least for me because I dont look up to a model or some actress. I look at other normal people that are thinn and say thats what I want to look like. It could also do with how self concious you are and how much self esteem you have. I have very little of eather. Being a teenager and not have ever having a boyfriend like all my friends makes me think what is wrong with me? What can I do to make my self more attractive? So of course theres make up and clothes and things like that but thats easy I think I guess I have to be skinny.
Sorry this was so long.
But I hope it helped.

TropKal just gave the most accurate reason for my anorexia which I thought no one ever understood, the 'I don't want to grow up, I want to be a child again', it also gets worse from stress, and the other reasons also play into it, but the resulting health problems and lack of mentrustion which I'm still not sure if is permanent, make things less than childlike..

I think it's either because most young people (Including me) are bored, and food is a way to occupy there time. If you just take one day and sit around all day, you'll find that you feel hungry, but only because you're bored. Another reason is depression, and a-lot of people find that food is the only happy thing in their life. Hope this helps. By the way... This is just my opinion it's not from a medical perspective.

Because they want to be accepted, and look like the 'pretty people'.

The bombardment that young people get from the media showing all the flawless celebrities (who have undoubtedly been photoshopped) is probably what's caused the increase over the past years.

This site has a lot of useful links on the subject...
