Do you think hypnosis or counselling would be better to treat an eating disorder?

i can't decide, hypnosis would be easier, but does it actually work?

on the other hand, it might be better to resolve any childhood issues that could be causing it.

anyone here have any experience with these methods and could tell me which is best?

thanks

(p.s i am a compulsive eater)

You and others may not like this answer.

It totally depends on why you compulsively eat, or at least why you believe that you compulsively eat. It also depends on what food you deliberately consume.

There are numerous medical reasons for overeating. Thyroid issues, the relative sense of being full, an inability to retain certain vitamins etc.

There are other reasons, like eating when bored instead of going for a walk, munching food whilst watching TV instead of spending an hour swimming or cycling. These cases are about the effective use of time combined with self-discipline.

Childhood issues are a cop-out. Strong characters blame elders for making mistakes and those characters learn from it. Weaker ones use it as an excuse for doing something that they know is wrong but can pass the blame onto somebody else.

Self-fulfilling inferiority complexes where an individual believes that they are not attractive to anybody else may overeat 'because it makes no difference', whereas they are actually making themselves less attractive to others.

Hypnosis only works when the individual already has the belief and the knowledge of the answer.

Counselling only works when there has been an external trigger (or excuse) for the person to take the overeating, or other self-harming action, and retrains the mind to deal with it. An example of this is the book "The Easy Way To Stop Smoking" by Alan Carr. Reading the book is statistically THE most successful way to stop smoking, but it only tells smokers what they already know, but refuse to admit.

So go and see your GP. Be frank and honest and let your Doctor decide exactly what your treatment needs to be. If you do not have a decent GP then contact "Changes" which is an NHS run confidential service that assists people with all sorts of addictive disorders. They are experts within this field and will have you back to normal in good speed.

hi,
counselling is effective and has long lasting results,to overcome the eating disorder you will need to isolate the cause and triggers, your disorder is a symptom of a problem, you need to deal with the root cause.i am learning this from my counsellor at

Make sure it is not a medical problem. Resolving childhood issues is not as important as changing how you think, feel, and behave today. You need self confidence and optimism. Hypnosis can help with these.

counseling and an evaluation by a psychiatrist may help, too. I don't know about the effectiveness of hypnosis, but i did receive counseling, a nutrition plan from a dietician, and medication from a doctor for my eating disorder.

no matter if you do one or the other, or both, the fact is that it all comes down to you.

i suggest a counselor before anything and have them help you.

I really don't know much about hypnosis but when i was having problems with that same thing i tried counseling and it has seemed to help me.
