Does this sound like I may be developing an eating disorder?


Every single minute of every single day I can only think about how fat I look. I always wonder what people think about my weight. I am always nervous around guys because I think they think I am fat. I think people talk behind my back about my weight. I have problems eating certain things. I still do eat them but it really small bits because I don't want people to think I am a pig. My mom was anorexic.

The fact that your mother is a recovering anorexic (like alcoholism, anorexia is something that you ever "used to be"...you are, or you are in recovery) is a red flag for you because eating disorders can be hereditary. Plus, growing up with a parent with unhealthy views on food and physical appearance can damage your views too.

The first thing you need to do is sit down and talk to your mom about how you feel about yourself and how you feel about food. You need to start counseling now while you are in the stage where you see the problem building because it will be easier to treat now than later when you start masking or hiding symptoms out of fear of being caught. Right now, you are not anorexic, and you see the problem, but leaving yourself in an "at risk for an eating disorder" can be just as dangerous as actually being anorexic.

You need to get help with your confidence and body image issues. Talk to your mom. Being a recovering anorexic, she will be more likely to understand your plight and know how to get you the help you need. I wish you luck!

No, not really. It's more like low self esteem and/ or Body Dimorphic Disorder. To have an eating disorder means that you would be obsessed by food, like you think about food every second of the day, untill you start dreaming about food. You would probably exercises way too much or make yourself sick or overdose on laxatives. If you think you have an eating disorder ask yourself this:

Feel guilty when eating certain foods.
Sneak food or eat large amounts on the spur of the moment
Prefer not to eat in front of other people
Stop going to fun events because there might be fattening foods.
Weigh myself a lot and feel fat even when I鈥檓 not
Often count calories and/or fat grams and worry about what I'll eat next.
Try not to eat for a while, and then overeat and feel bad.
Make myself vomit, use laxatives, or over exercise.

If you said yes to any of these, especially the last question, you may have a problem and you should eithr talk to you mum or see your GP.

(Anorexia isn't genetic by the way, so the fact that your mum had it shouldn't be an issue, unless she was anorexic very recently, then it might have made an impression on you)

Not necessarily. It does indicate the potential for you to become anorexic, so I would definitely get some therapy before this happens. And if you were alive when your Mom was anorexic, I absolutely would, since this gave you a behavior model to imitate when you were very impressionable.

wow you have the same problems as me, hate to be the bearer of bad news but you'll most likely go to the next faze of refusing to eat anything. Try not to worry on what other people think of you and stay healthy :)
