Do psychiatrists work for people who have eating disorders? |
I have been bulimic for six years and I have had really low self-esteem ever sense I was a child. I saw a psychiartrist about two years ago because my husband and I were having problems in our marriage. We are doing fine now, but I don't know how I feel about psychiartist. Do they actualy care about your problems are do they just want your money? Today was the first time that I went to the dr. for my eating disorder. He put me on prozac and did some blood work. He wants me to see a psy. I really don't have to many people to talk to about this because it is still my little secret. I did tell my husband though. He is the one that encouraged me to get help. I also think that paying $100 for one hour is crazy. It really depends on which psychiatrist you end up going to. Some are condescending and make the problem worse, but others genuinely care and have the skills to help you. If you're serious about seeking treatment, I think having a psychiatrist can be really beneficial, but do choose one carefully. Research; find out who has the best reputation in your area & is affordable to you. $100 an hour IS absolutely ridiculous, but it can be a very small price to pay to gain back a life w/out the bulimia. Remember- a psychiatrist can only supply you w/ the stepping stones to recover; you have to be the one that puts them into place. Stay strong. yes they really do help yes it is in the dsm iv. Good counseling would probably help you overcome you eating disorder, but it does not necessarily have to be an expensive psychiatrist. You may be able to find a support group in your area. Some federal programs are available with counseling services in most states as well. A disorder is a disturbance of normal functioning within the body. Psychological disorders are often treated by psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists and clinical counselors. Most cases of abnormal function are psychologically related. Bulimia and anorexia are both psychological disorders and not physical disorders. Therefore, it is common for these disorders to be treated under the care of above mentioned docotrs. some psychiatrists know about therapy but therapy really is done by psychologists. $100 for good therapy is not bad. I have a psychiatrist who does therapy and he is an amazing person and has helped me tremendously. there are many bad health professionals out there so just make sure to find one that you feel that will help you and that you can connect to. It is definitely worth whatever $ to get better. Bulimia may be socially accepted but it also destroys your body. I'm sure, if you have or are going to have kids, that you do not want them to see your behaviors. Many children have eating disorders that stem from their parent's eating disorders. i recommend you get help from a psychologist who works w/a psychiatrist (so you can get good therapy and possible medication) A Psychiatrist is just what the Doctor should order for you and your disorder. Not only his a Psych. highly educated, but he can also prescribe meds. Bulimia and Anorexia are one of the number one Mental Health issues in the US today. It's hard to just to anyone about the illness, because unless they are educated about the illness, they will not understand completely. Most people think it's a passing faze females go through for attention, or a weight loss thing to just be thin. You know it's a MUCH deeper problem than that, and it can hurt and cause a lot of problems in your life. Including death. Your husband loves you, and I hope you have good insurance!!! |
