When is it neccessary to seek professinal care for eating disorders? |
Anorexia is when one uses food and exercise inappropriately, right? Is there a difference between anorexia and pro-anorexia? If one appears and looks healthy wouldn't a medical provider pass up the idea if one has an eating disorder? How can one tell if one is pro-anorexic or anorexic? anorexia is a medical condition-- pro-anorexia is is a term used for people who supprt an "anorexic lifestyle". If you feel you or someone else is anorexic, but doesn't look anorexic per se, it is wise to bring this up with a doctor. Unfortunately, there are docs that don't understand anorexia and may pass it up, but be persistent if this is the case or see another doctor. The sooner you treat anorexia, the better the outcome will be. Anorexia is a fatal illness. Please continue to seek help. There are several types of eating disorders, but to answer your questions, anorexia is the disorder itself, pro-anorexia is a title for someone who is supportive of anorexia (usually are anorexic themselves). Different disorders have different effects to your body, I had Bulimia nervosa for 4 years and my doctors never knew, my parents never knew, not until towards the end when I over did it and got lazy with things, a medical provider may pass it up if they do a normal exam and weren't looking, but an eating disorder is considered a mental disease, it is something that some people just don't have symptoms of unless you know what little thigns to look for. Check out this site I did, it has tons of info on the four most common eating disorders "anorexia nervosa, bulimia, binge/purge, and compulsive overeating". http://www.myeatingdisorder.com... For anorexia, watch her weight, she should start wearing looser fitting clothes, dark circles under her eyes, brittle fingernails, she may pick at her food but won't necessarily eat much of it, she will get sick often, light headed or dizzy, pale face... There are a lot of different things to look for, on the site it has lists for each disorder, along with different treatment options, stories, statistics etc on there. It is really serious and not to be taken lightly... I hope this helps you some, Toni Lynne :) |
