I have a family member that is looking online for help with alcohol & eating disorders, are chat rooms ok?

She has talked to several people on different sites, but I'm not sure is getting what she needs. Just trying to help, not sure what to do.

No. Online is not going to help her. She needs professional help and you can't get that online. She needs to go to detox and treatment ASAP. Chat rooms are for those who have been in recovery for a while and you aren't looking for someone to SAVE you--which happens to a LOT with beginning recovering addicts. It is not a substitute for the help you must have.
I wouldn't suggest it. Mainly because in chat rooms people do not seem to have any sympathy, they are always trying to say something clever and funny and this may be worse for her. Also, she fall victim to some low life that gives her false hopes and dreams only to be shattered later on.

Support groups are good, there maybe websites that can offer safe chat rooms but not just any chat room would be good for her, it needs to be a controled environment.
Sometimes.

Regards
I don't think a chat room is a very good idea. People in chat rooms don't have any sympathy or care what they may say. There feelings might get hurt.
I would recommend a Support group. I know support groups can kind of be embarrassing (you have to open up about your feelings in front of people).
I would also try an online support group, that way there are different types of people to talk with, that have the same problem.

Maybe on a superficial sense... but no, she needs more help than this. Maybe she is getting used to the idea but isn't totally convinced she has an issue.

She needs medical help, not chat help. Some chat places are good for support but not help. Also, the other post-er is right, she could fall victim to a predator who will harm her. :(
Find her a rehab place. I think the easiest way to get help is to get away from the factors that trigger your disorders, which is to enter rehab. There should be some places that are free in your area, though they may take some time to get into.

The reason I advise this is because she probably needs a push to get moving on her self improvement, and people online may not offer that.

If she won't go to rehab get her some counseling fast! Alcoholism and eating disorders are both signs of someone suppressing something, she needs to get that out and dealt with or it'll continue.

Best of luck.
You never know who you are talking to and you may end up getting affraid of things people tell you that may not be true, this site included. your better off seeking medical help or consulting official health sites.
