What can society do to stop the spread of bulemia, anorexia, and other eating disorders around the world?

Anorexia:

Extreme physical activity;
Hair, nail, or skin problems;
Depression and low self-esteem;
Denial of the problem.

Bulimia:

Purchase of large quantities of food;
Abuse of laxatives or diuretics;
Secretive behavior regarding eating habits;
Weight fluctuations;
Depression;
Denial of the problem.

Young girls are taught from a very young age to be "pretty" and that looks are very important. Society makes such a big deal about outer appearance. Everyday we see commercials for different beauty products and girls are taught that they need to look pretty to be happy. Also, girls compare their bodies to the people on TV. In reality, the people on TV are on strict diets and spend a lot of their time excercising to keep up their image.

Instead of teaching young girls how to dress up and fix their hair, let's motivate them to play sports, follow their dreams, be strong, educated, etc. Then maybe they won't have time to be depressed about how "fat" they are. They'll be focused on the more important things in life. Maybe. . . Source(s): Personal experience :-)
The root of problem lies in the society's obsession with reed thin celebrity like body. When that obsession goes.....so will this problem.
well honestly it will never end as long as all the celebrities are stick thin and the media promotes it all. curvy girls are no longer acceptable b/c of like likes of nicole richie, paris hilton, keira knightly, and kate bosworth. it's really sick and wrong and all the poor 9 year olds are becoming anorexic. how sad. 鈾?
