What kind of eating disorder does my child has? |
I have a child that eats just about anything. He eats uncooked/cooked items. He eats his regular meals a day, but continues to sneak uncooked/cooked items. He hides them under his bed. Sometimes after he tries the uncooked meat/items he realize they are not good and throws them under his bed. He doesn't care what the food items is, he will eat it. He has eaten everything from raw meats to uncooked pasta, rices, etc....He doesn't seem to get sick from eating these items. He does have Cerebral Palsy and Autism, but no one seems to know what causes him to eat all of these items. In order to keep grocery items in the home we have to have locks on everything. Last week, he broke the locks off the cabinet and the refrigerator to continue to sneek. He is 13 years old. Please help. has he ever been checked for prader- willie syndrome? it is usually diagnosed in infancy but with other issues maybe it was missed? It seems like he's binge eating, "binge eating is a pattern of disordered eating which consists of episodes of uncontrollable overeating..." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/binge_eatin... Compulsive overeating. sounds like his an complusive eating disorder where the person has to eat all the time they are never full It sounds like it could be binge eating disorder (compulsive overeating). If he ever eats nonnutritive items, it could be pica. You didn't state what his cognitive level is, but these behaviors are often associated with forms of mental retardation. (However, I'm not stating that your son is.) Pica can sometimes indicate a nutritional deficiency. I would definitely talk to your doctor about it and see if you can get a referral. It sounds like you are taking the appropriate steps to prevent the behavior. Is it possible to put a locked door leading into the kitchen? It sounds like Compulsive Overeating. It's not bing eating if he doesn't purge (puke up) the foods he's eaten. This is definetly something serious.Im a kid, and I love to eat, all types of food except uncooked food. That's something you should do something about, or it will get worse. Does he also try to eat non-food items? If so it may be Pica. If not it could be a sensory or ritualistic issue due to his autism. Consult a developmental ped. |
