Is Calorie Reduction the next eating disorder? |
Is Calorie Reduction the next eating disorder? Hmm.. they just did an article about that on MSN just today.. from what I read, I personally think it could be. It seems that CR is a just a hidden type of anorexia. People seem to think that CR is "healthier" than being anorexic because they do it for "health" reasons. However, that being said, CR can definitely start someone on the path to anorexia. I mean, the same thought process is evident in both of them. The counting of calories, limited food, what kinds of food, cooking a big meal and not eating it, lacing it with tons of herbs and spices.... CR definitely seems like a cover up for anorexia, and yes, it very well could be the next eating disorder, if it's not already.. No. Reasonable calorie reduction is a part of any sensible weight loss plan. Pathologizing reasonable behavior may make for good tv ratings and sell books, but it doesn't make it a reality. It is when calorie reduction becomes excessive that you need to consider the possibility of an eating disorder. I feel that calorie reduction can be helpful to successfully manage your weight, but if the person gets out of hand, it could go horribly wrong. If this person has a history of anorexia or bulimia, they should be carefully watched so they don't get back to their old ways. If done correctly and healthily it can be a great help. I think and hope that being skinny is just a fad. It's getting better, because today you can see actresses on T.V. that you would not have seen 5 years ago. But it's mostly celebrities and models that are too skinny. Your average people at the supermarket or the mall are not skinny, but more often overweight. I wouldnt say so. If you are cutting down your calories at reasonable portions, than you should be doing things right. But, just like any healhty lifestyle change, if it is taken to the extreme it can be considered an eating disorder. When planning to change your caloric intake, you should consult your physician, so they can give you good pointers on how to go about it. I can understanf your concern though... I guess it depends on the person who decides to do it. Hope this sheds some insight =] |
