Why do people who h ave eating disorder deny it.. until later. like lindsay lohan.. mk olsen. even hilary duf because they do not want ot admit there is a problem and usually there is a reason a person develops an eating disorder. i know people who denied it for years until it got so bad the couldnt deny it anymore Eating disorders happen because girls have distorted preceptions of how they should appear. No matter what the reality is, when they look in the mirror they see someone whose body isn't the way they want it to look. In many ways, anorexics and bulimics are no different than alcohol and drug abusers. The denial that is their very existence is so powerful only an intervention by family and/or close friends can get the person to acknowledge that they have a problem. I don't really know the details of many of the celebrities who've been rumored to have eating disorders. I do know that the entertainment and media industry's unspoken obsession with body image is hard to overcome. Rather than chastise these young women, I think it would be far better to be sympathetic towards them. Despite their fame and its attendant financial rewards, their lives are far from perfect. People with eating disorders (including anorexia nervosa, bullemia & obesity), people addicted to drugs (including alcohol), people who gamble, who are shopaholics, people who smoke cigarettes...etc., etc., etc., all have a problem with self image. Each of us have some small or big thing we obsess on, but it is easier to see it in others than in ourselves. If we don't or cannot see it in ourselves, how can we admit to it? I work with a nurse who vomits after eating..... she knows it's unhealthy and would/has denied when confronted. She does it because she believes it works for her....on some level this is why all of us are the way we are....it seems to work for us. |
