Can an overwieght person delevop an eating disorder? as in anorexia or bulimia? |
I mean like if an overweight person just decided to stop eating or purge after eating...i know in a way it would be good b/c they'd be losing weight but my theory is that if someone overweight lost lots of pounds they might develop one b/c they might not want to become overweight again... YES anyone can develop an eating disorder. Just like anyone can both overweight and underweight can fall under the spell of 'crash-dieting'. Bad eating habits know no name. You are absolutely right. It can & does happen. anyone can develop an eating disorder. common knowledge sure; I suppose for overweight people it's even more probable to get an eating disorder (as in "I've lost all this weight because of this/might get them back if I stop again") Of course, eating disorders are not limited to the size of a person. And your right, alot of the problem is mental. There are actually alot of overweight people with eating disorders, this is another reason you must see a shrink before having gastric bypass. Yes, of course anyone can develop Anorexia. It's a mental disorder, it can strike anyone with a predispostion to a combination of obsessive/compulsive type behaviour and body image disorders. It doesn't have a preference for a particular body type or size. But, it is NEVER a good thing. Please understand that. When Anorexics starve themselves by drastically limiting their food intake, their body goes into starvation mode and starts storing as much fat as possible, whilst breaking down all of your muscle tissue. So whilst you may weigh less initially, you are actually becoming fatter due to loss of muscle, whilst your body is desparately trying to reserve fat! When Anorexics finally do start losing fat, which is obviously inevitable, they will have already lost a lot of muscle tissue, which will be very difficult to replace without intense weight training. If and when they recover and gain weight, they will most likely have a higher body fat percentage than before they started losing the weight. Really it's the worst thing that anyone can do to their body, whether that person starts out underweight, average weight or overweight, it is never a good thing and is always extremely damaging to your body and your mind. Hope this makes sense. Take care : ) |
