How do I approach my friend about her eating disorder? |
I have a good friend that is 24 years old, 5'7", 113 lbs, and 9% body fat. She is obsessed with counting calories and tries to limit herself to 1200 a day, but sometimes "slips" and has up to 1500. She loads up on lean protein and avoids carbs or real sugar (she puts splenda on everything). Anytime she does have something "unhealthy", she exercises more. She goes to the gym every day, sometimes twice a day. This is normal because we are in the military, but not her eating habits. She has gone over 3 months without her period. She's always going to the doctor for digestive/stomach problems and says they can't seem to diagnose what is wrong with her. She thought she might have celiac disease. I feel like I'm the only one who sees what she's doing to herself. She gets headaches and feels really weak and tired some days. I tried to tell her she should try to increase her calories, but she says when she does, her jeans start fitting tighter and she goes above 113 lbs. Ask her out to a buffet! Sit her down and tell her how concerned you are. Tell her that she is too thin and needs to get help. Let her know that you want to help her and go with her to get help. |
