How Do You Know When You Have An Eating Disorder? |
My sister used to be a tad bit overweight, it was noticable she was bigger than normal but it really looked good on her, and sadly our Dad started harassing her and calling her 'fat', 'chunky' and other things. She ended up losing 30 pounds over the summer. She's still losing weight. She was 5'7" and 165 pounds before, and now she keeps losing weight.. she's down to 129 pounds and counting. She keeps complaining of feeling guilty after she eats, and I'm concerned for her.. I don't think she's throwing up, but I do notice she's still counting calories and restricting herself to eating no more than around 500-800 calories a day... I'm worried about her.. any advice? If and when you start seeing signs that this has gone too far and especially if you see it beginning to effect her general health Then is the time to step in -- and early would be best when this happens--- and have an encounter with her about it all !! Until then just be happy for her new found -- regenerated self -- and encourage her with statements that affirm her loss and new look with the strong input of----It's great that you can start easing up now on all this loss thing because you are almost perfect the way you are and you sure don't want to start looking like a stick------kind of stuff---she should get the message !!!! talk to her...plain and simple I had an eating disorder and even though people talked at me about it, I was never talked TO about it. You need to constantly reassure her self-image because that is what's damaged. Plus she has no control right now and her weight is the one thing that she might feel is finally in her grasp. It's hard to break and the thoughts never ever stop but with help you can do it. P.S. someone should tell your dad that he's a jerk for calling her names like that; no doubt in my mind that he's a reason why she is doing this well i struggle with ed myself so i know this is hard... be supportive of your sis and let her know that you love her and want her to be healthy. it might be wise to have her get therapy because if she loses too much weight she will die... or have many other painful health complications... she might resist any attempt to help her but in the end she will thank you... i dont think that she really wants to die but if you dont help her now it will only continue to get worse.... and i am just warning you it will be a long battle. family counseling may help Well, right now her weight is still OK, she could still stand to lose a couple more, but 500-800 calories is dangerously low. She needs to take in more calories and exercise more if she wants to lose any more weight. I hope she is at least taking vitimans. Never the less, your Dad may have done some pernament damage to your sisters psych. This is how the anorexics start, they lose the weight and still feel they look fat. I myself have lost over 50 lbs and feel even fatter before I lost the weight..... Reason: I can now see my stomach past my chest.....so it's all a matter of perception. You can help her by positive reinforcement. Tell her honestly that she looks great and that you are concerned about her health. Help her shop for new, smaller clothes and tell her how good she looks in them. 500-800 calories a day? Wah, that is pretty drastic. Yes, this could be categorized as an eating disorder. Based on her age, from 15 years old to 21, she should be consuming anywhere from 2155(15yrs) to 2113(21yrs) calories a day. As any person could see, she is not consuming even half of what her body needs, yes needs. By cutting down that much on calories, she should at least be eating the best calories for her body to be running on. Are you sure she is not throwing up? It's not as obvious as you would think, I was bulemic for 5 years before anyone caught on so... She needs to start eating more calories, because her metabolism has now slowed and is going to continue this, and her body will start to retain fat so it can run all of the bodily functions correctly. If anything, once she decides to start eating the right amount of calories a day, she will start to gain weight quicker, so she needs to increase her caloric intake to at least 1000 a day, but gradually. |
