What do you think when a husband supports his wife's eating disorder? |
I just found out my friend (who I just saw for the first time in a year) and she's bulimic. She told me after I interrogated her about her big weight loss. I asked her if her husband knew and she said he was like all for it as long as she didn't get sick. What's your take on this?? Hi! I think he is enabling her behavior by his "co-operation". And is in a major denial about it all, or, very uninformed, or blind. Whatever the case, he's making all the wrong moves here. She IS sick...everyday, probably several times a day. She risks esophageal bleeding, destroying her teeth, her electrolytes have to be way low. And she is risking her life. I hope some intervention comes about, soon, within her family. I know as her friend, you probably want to jump right to her and rescue her, but you can't, as much as you would like to. She has to hit her own rock bottom and it will come, or her being forced into treatment, which rarely takes hold, they resent it. It is an insidious disorder, very hard to deal with. Could your friend just be saying that he's ok with it to keep anyone from telling him? i think thats horrible how someone can support something like that she's slowly killing herself by having an eating disorder. she should get help at a clinic if the husbad wants her around for a long time well honestly for me thats a bad idea. i mean your life partner should be thaere for you and as in caring for you and doing the right the decisions. but then if you guys are happy on whats going on then it up to you. My first husband didn't like the fact that I gained weight after we were married and threatened to divorce me. I had very low self-esteem at the time and became anorexic for years after that. He encouraged it and would ask me how much I had had to eat that day and would weigh me if I told him I had gone to lunch with friends, etc. At one point my kidneys began to shut down and I got really sick. Yes, I was thin and gorgeous, but I divorced him when I found out he was having an affair with a woman 50 pounds heavier than me....20 years later, I am now remarried, overweight, but happier and healthier than I've ever been. Thats very very sad, she needs people encouraging her to stop the habit! ask her to come and stay with you for awhile if that is possible i guess or maybe you could go on a girls weekend somewhere and just spend time with her encouraging her to eat healthy and not vomit. She needs positive people in her life to stop the habit. |
