What is the first step in helping your child deal with an eating disorder?

Specifically, not eating, or not eating enough...

When I as 21 I became anorexic/bulimic. I ate only one banana and a diet soda a day and took 20+ laxitives aday and puff! 3 mos later I was 45 lighter. No one was gonna change me...no doctor, not my parent, noone!!! One night, home alone, I passed out and awoke on the kitchen floor just below the sugar bowl. I fed my self sugar and got enough energy to get to bed. I lived because I hit bottom. Noone can tell you how to fix this situation, all situations are different. But I was in a hospital due to depression and seen girls with tubes down thier noses to feed them and they said...when this comes out I will lose again. You can not entice, force, or demand someone to eat. ALL people with eatting disorders do it to be in control of something in life...somewhere they feel like they have lost that ability, I DID TOO. My parents were the best parents, we were comfortable in life, we went places together...we were a good family, BUT because of what they did for a living and thier good natures I felt like I was drowning and out of control of my dicisions. You can take your child to the grocery store and say" pick whatever food you want" and I guarentee you they will say "apple, banana, lettuce, carrots, diet soda, etc." IT IS NOT ABOUT THE FOOD PEOPLE!!!!!! IT IS NOT ABOUT THE WEIGHT EXACTLY, it is about control. Get a doctor for your child, you need one, get what ever medically you need, gotta cover that aspects in life. But somehow you gotta find out where the control problem is in thier life. Did they lose aparent? Divorce, breakup with boyfriend, what is it? Mine was small and to most people was stupid...I had it all great, but deep inside of my great family and I really do mean great, there was silence when there should have been chatter, I was watched like a hawk(because they were great parents, ) and believe it or not we never ate dinner together, we went to different tv's in the house. I was adopted and I never regretted it, but anorexics pick up on the smallests of things. Then we pick an idol, someone skinny...mine was Karen Carpenter,( i was born in the 70s) she died of it , I knew it and still wanted to be her. Listen to the child closely, ask what they would change in thier life, never complain about thier answer. They will not change overnight. I was asked to eat 50-100 calories more every day and I was able to do it...good luck and if I can help more write me...I care Source(s): Been there, really was there and I understand
Finding a treatment facility.
