I am seeking help for a friend who has just been diagnosed with an 'unspecified eating disorder'? |
Hi, I have a friend who has gone to her GP to seek help for her eating. She has been diagnosed with an unspecified eating disorder with marked bullemic and anorexic tendancies. She see's a team of people, although all her sessions are irregular and are across several different sites. Her dietician has told her to 'get used to the fact that you are just bigger than you wish to be' and even though she eats nothing, exercises 5 times a week and is now on laxatives they don't seem to be taking her seriously. To enter a unit she needs to be less weight and she has been that thin before and is now considering doing it again so they will listen. I'm very very concerned and don't know where to go for help. This is terrible that she got treated like this. being told to get used to it will only make it worse. I agree she should see a different GP. The sooner she will receive proper help the more likely it is that she will recover from her condition. Eating disorders become worse the longer they persist because it becomes such a big part of your life and you develop behaviour patterns that can be very hard to break once manifested. try also ringing the Mind helpline : 0845 7660 163 www.mind.org.uk They also have leaflets on different conditions and can give you advise. Sane also have a advise line: SANEline 0845 767 8000 www.sane.org.uk All the best for you and your friend ! Try this website is has free weight loss information & workout routines to get into shape. http://www.boeafitness.com yh, what they diagnosed her with isan Eating Disorder Otherwise Unclassified. Its when the person is not yet under weight but has anorexic/bulimic/both tendancies. I think its ridiculous that doctors dont pay attention to things like this- they actually can do some good to prevent a full blown eating disorder with a person becoming under weight. I think you definately, definately MUST get them to listen . Any way you can, they have to . If it goes untreated she WILL become underweight and could DIE! You must get them to see that she is not well and must be helped. I wish you luck. Feel free to email me for further advice because i cant really say everything on here. If she doesn't feel that she is being taken seriously then she needs to quit seeing that doctor and the team and find someone who will listen. Encouraging her to have the courage to get another doctor will help empower her and take charge of her own health. Keep telling her that she deserves to be taken seriously and to be helped to overcome her eating disorder. Look for someone who specializes in eating disorders. Who is her medical power of attorney. She needs someone who will dictate to medical personnel what is to be done on her behalf or there will be legal action taken. My guess is she is diagnosed as unspecified cuz she isn't one or the other. She have insurance? Get to a disability lawyer, get her on disability and send her to a place they will care about her. Just remember this is a control issue and if you enable her too much you will be the other person she controls besides what she eats , throws up, binges or doesn't eat. That's all she has control of. She needs a serious therapist with eating disorders as a primary practice. retired licensed psych SW. I CANNOT BELIEVE that this person is actually reaching out for help, and is being turned away because she needs to be to thinner. And now she is taking pills to get to a potential "death weight" to get into a treatment center. I am sick!!! What is wrong with this society! F*#K!!!! Okay, that did not help the situation, but I had to get that out. "Unspecified" with tendacies to want to be someone else, so much to want to die? That is where she will be if she does not get help. She has been in this situation before? Any chance of returning to the therapit who assister her in the first place to ask for guidance? Or is that the treatment center she called to try to get back into? I am so sorry your friend is going through this. It is aweful, and I hate to read about ANYONE struggling with this. Geeze! I am surprised that the dietician said, "Just get used to the fact that you are just bigger than you wish to be." I would suggest changing dieticians. She needs a support system now. Not counting on one individual whose suggestion is within a "Just get used to it " attitude. Being the good friend that you are, obviously, I would inform members of her family and tell them her objective. I know that under any eating disorder, there is some kind of pain; either from the past, present, or even fear of the future. Just like a drug, or alcohol, one thinks they need to feel strong, perfect, smart, and/or PRETTY & BEAUTIFUL to survive under the circumstances of their lives. Before I get negative feedback, I am not assuming that any, or all, diseases are the same. I am suggesting the underlying factors that simulate the need to continue something that is harmful and potentially deadly to the body. The Heart is where the beauty comes from. Mend the heart, help the mind, and eat well, and accept the love for the Self. Regardless of looks. Most important is health. Eat, drink, live, and MOST of ALL, SMILE Happiness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish you the best of luck and hope you are successful. Bless YOUR heart |
