How can I help a friend who may be developing an eating disorder? |
I have been best friends with this girl since I was 8 years old and am now 20. She is literally one of the prettiest people I know. She has a perfect figure but does not see herself that way. She has always thought her legs were too big. She is 5'4" and could weigh no more than 120 lbs. We were spending time together last night and she asked me if I wanted to start going to the gym with her and I told her I'd love to and it would be fun. She said she had gained weight and wanted to lose some. This, I thought may be normal. Then she told me that she had thrown up a few times after eating too much. She tried to down play it by saying that she had only done it a couple times and only when she had eaten way too much but I know better. I explained to her that this is how these things start out, as 'just a couple times when I ate too much' but then it progresses to where you are addicted to purging and can't stop. She needs professional help which she may tell you that you are wrong. If there is a personal trainer or nutritionist at the gym you are considering or find a gym that has these services available, have them discuss this with her. Speak to a counsellor. It helps. I've been through it. :) talk to a school counselor |
