Why do people with eating disorders take laxatives?

Before I start I'd like to point out that I don't have an eating disorder, I'm just curious as to why people that suffer from anorexia & bulimia over dose on laxatives. How does taking laxatives keep your weight down & what damage does long term use do to your body?

First, I need to correct the information from Natalie that laxatives can speed up your metabolism. It is not!

There is no specific reason I can mention why people with eating disorders take laxatives. It all originates from their "mind".Based on their psychology, they get a strong feeling about their weight and appearance that they wanted to shed or gain weight or so that they will look better. It is completely from their mind. That is why it is called as a " disorder".
Normally ,laxatives are indicated when a person is constipated. In other circumstances, it is prescribed to eliminate toxins(ammonia) from the intestines when the person suffers with a chronic liver problem.

Taking excess amount of laxatives, of course speed up your bowel movements hence, causing less nutrients absorbed from your bowels. Some type of laxatives cause osmotic effect across the walls of the bowels which results in excess amount of water is drawn up from the cells and tissues. That`s why you may notice the stools obviously become watery. Any excess amount of water loss from the body normally contributes to weight loss. So, it is the combination of water and nutrients loss resulting in weight loss.

Chronic use of laxatives can cause bowels that become flaccid(loss of tone) that end up in incontinence or may aggravate the severity of the constipation. It may get worse as you become aged. Few reports suggest that long term use of laxatives may cause bowel perforation. However, the evidence in this matter remains inadequate.
Hope, this helps. Source(s): I am an Intensive care nurse.
laxatives help the metabolism work faster. When people are desperate to become thin and they did eat something, they often overuse laxatives which basically..give them diarrhoea..and get rid of the calories. Laxatives can strain a person's intestines and stop them from absorbing nutrients etc.
Well, that's what my friend went though
not sure if I should answer in case you then think it is a goods idea but the pourpose is so that when you eat before your body has a chance to retain fat and calories you take laxatives to make you go to the loo and rid your body of the calories you have just eaten. It is extremely dangerous and ultimately can kill you.

It helps them keep the weight down even more. It is like a person with a drinking disorder who has no liquor so he/she drinks the mouthwash.
It can damage your organs, you're belly stays swelled, you can die.
