Endometriosis - Anyone else have this?

On Saturday I woke up with really bad pains in my side and bleeding when I shouldn't be. I went to the hospital and they decided to keep me over night. I was told originally it was probably cysts since I'd had them before.. But sometime around 12am a new doctor came in and asked me if I'd ever heard of Endometriosis because I probably have it.

I'm going for an internal ultrasound on Wednesday, I've never had one before... And surgery has been mentioned a few times. I've had surgery for cysts before so would it be close to this?

I know what it is.... I wanted other peoples experiences with surgery. I'm smart enough to google it....

I have also been suspected of having endometriosis and have two women in my family with it. I have had a laparoscopy once before, but the doctor said she didn't find anything. I'm having another one next week with a different doctor to check again for endo.

The internal ultrasound is definitely no big deal. It's like a normal ultrasound, only they use a probe (looks like a long rod) and insert it slightly into your vagina so they can get a better picture on the ultrasound. The probe part doesn't hurt at all, you just feel a little bit of pressure.

When you said that you've had surgery before for cysts, I assume you mean you had a laparoscopy to remove the cysts. If you did have a laparoscopy for the cysts, the surgery is the exact same surgery to see if you have endometriosis. They just go in with a small lighted scope to look around at your reproductive organs to look for endometriosis or other abnormalities. Laparoscopy is the only way to definitively diagnose endometriosis.

I hope this helps! Good luck with the ultrasound and if you have surgery!

Endometriosis is a condition in which endometrium, the tissue that normally lines the womb (uterus), grows in locations outside the uterus. Endometriosis may cause adhesions (fibrous scar tissue) on the uterus. The uterus can become stuck to the ovaries, fallopian tubes and bowel.

The symptoms of endometriosis include:

Painful periods
Pain with sex
Pelvic pain
Ovulation pain
Pain in the lower back and thighs
Bowel symptoms
Bladder symptoms
Reduced fertility
Nausea and lethargy
Pre-menstrual tension (PMT).

endometriosis is a condition where the uterus lining grows in places outside the uterus. it stills responds to hormones, and bleeds, which can be particularly painful. its very common.
many women with this condition can conceive fine, but just need help handling the pain!

a girl at our work used to suffer from it.

its thickening of the endometrium which i think is the lining of the uterus. The lining grows excessively and bits can flake off and travel to different areas of the body but is usally found in the pelvis area.

Causes severe pain and discomfort and heavy bleeding around period time i believe.

No cure but there are a host of medicines available to manage the pain.

I think surgery is only used where its a particularly bad case although im sure they may need to do a little biopsy of something.

Its a particularly nasty condition and can lead to infertility im afraid.

On a positive note the girl at our office suffered really badly (had problems with her knees which believe it or not was caused by floating tissue from the uterus!!!), but she is now the proud mother of a little girl.

I'm sure with a positive outlook and support from the doctors, family anf friend you'll learn to manage the condition

Good luck
