Is a Mirena IUD safe for someone with Endometriosis?

I have endometriosis and the doctor recommended I get an IUD. He said that it would really help with my pain. I went in for the procedure and it went bad. I cried in pain cause it hurt so much. The doctor finally got it in but as he was cutting the string it fell out. After I went for it someone told me it was not safe for people with endometriosis.

I have a doctors appointment to decide what will be done next. The doctor said he could put me to sleep so I will not feel the pain. I do really like my doctor. I have seen 2 other doctors and this is the only one that seems like he wants to help. I want to trust his opinion but it hurt so bad that I never want to do it again. I don't know what to do next.

Some doctors recommend Mirena for endo because it contains hormones in a constant dosage that in theory stop menses, and so would stop the endo pain. However, not everyone has a good experience with Mirena (especially if you've never had a full-term pregnancy -- and sometimes even if you have), and some women don't see any improvement in their symptoms.

If you find after 6 months your symptoms are not improved and you're not comfortable with the IUD, then have it removed.

It can help with your bleeding patterns. I would say doctor knows best but if in any doubt, get a second opinion. I'm sorry your experience was so horrible, I had one put in last week but they put me to sleep in hospital (because I've never had children).

If you aren't happy with your doctor, see another one.

Have you heard of Zoladex? Not sure if you would be suitable but it's an implant that's inserted into your tummy (under the skin, minor procedure compared to the Mirena) to suppress your periods.

It's a common recommendation for people with endometriosis. It's usually advertised as a birth control method for women who have had children, and are in "stable" sexual relationships (whatever that is) so women with endo don't usually fit the "ideal" candidate profile. But that isn't set in stone, lots of women get them to help with endo.

....I myself was way too scared to get one to help the potential endometriosis I might have (I opted for progesterone pills instead). I know the insertion process can be quite painful, that sucks you had to go through that :(
