Depo Provera for Endometriosis treatment?

Hi, I am 17 and I have been battling extreme menstrual cramps from endometriosis since I was 11. These cramps are so bad that I will vomit, become unable to form sentences, and eventually pass out from the pain.

My doctor prescribed 2 different types of birth control pills, neither worked. Right now I take Tylenol 3 with codeine, and another strong painkiller to deal with the pain, and the pain has gotten so bad that these barely help anymore.

So the doctor did an ultrasound, and found a cyst on my ovary. He put me on Depo Provera shots every two months, and he is going to do surgery in a few months.

I was wondering, has Depo Provera helped anyone else with endometriosis? I can't stand the pain anymore! I have heard awful things about Depo Provera, but my doctor seems to think it will work.

First of all stop taking Codeine. It is highly addictive and will cause constipation. Stick to Paracetamol and/or ibuprofen unless contradicted.

Progestogen contraceptives such as Norethisterone are used to help Endometriosis but other drugs are usually better. However if you have tried everything else then this may work. It basically reduces the effect oestrogen has on the endometrial cells and causes the cells to shrink and die.

Oestrogen causes the cells to grow which causes a problem with endometrosis as patches grow outside of the uterine cavity- this leads to swelling and adhesion's to nearby organs and cysts which is what causes the pain. Progestogens also prevent ovulation which lowers the oestrogen level. Give it a go and see what happens.
