Does this sound like endometriosis? scared..please help.?

Hi I am 18 years old and a female. For the past 2 or 3 months I have been experiances irregular periods, really bad pelvic pain when I play soccer, abnormally tired. I went to the OBGYN and she did an examine and said it sounds like endometriosis and wants me to do something called a lap? She said my bladder felt really tender. Can someone please tell me either other possibilities or their thoughts? I'm really scared and my mom wants me to make a decision on the surgery by tomorrow. thanks..

Yes, this does sound like it could be endometriosis but a hormone imbalance of other sorts (an example only) can also cause some of the symptoms that you are noticing.

As for a laparoscopy, it is an outpatient surgery. It is the best way to find out for sure if someone has endometriosis because when endometriosis occurs the tissue is so thin usually that it won't show up on tests like ultrasounds.

If you would like to talk to me some more about this please feel free to e-mail me off site any time.

Hi
The other options you have, aside from surgery are:

Birth control pills - endometriosis happens when your endometrium tissue (occurs with your period) sheds outside of the womb and then it causes you pain. The pill controls your hormones so controls the tissue, therefore less pain.

Diet & Nutrition - Certain foods can aggravate endo and there has been some research on endo diet. I've used the Candida Diet (see http://www.candidadiet.healthprogramsite... which has helped greatly.

Lupron - This is another hormone which comes as an injection. This causes a significant reduction in estrogen levels, and causes you to experience menopause-like side effects. It's used to treat severe endo so not usually a first step in treating endo.

Whilst surgery can sound scary, it really isn't that bad once you've had it. You don't remember anything and then when you wake up, you'll have a tender stomach for 1-2 weeks and the hardest part for me was not being able to play sport for 4-6 weeks until I was completely healed.

The advantages is that at least you will know and then can look at incorporating other changes in your life if you need to.

Best of luck
