My dog has epilepsy is it because he eats humane food ?

since we got our dog he is 2 years old
he does not like eating dog food i dont know why and every time we try to feed him his food he wont eat it.

we sometimes feed him humane food like chicken meat bread

no chocolate stuff

so is it cause of his food he eats that causes him 2 have epilepsy seizer

and is it ok for my dog too eat the foods i named ?

and how can i train my dog 2 eat his own food

he is a boston terrier mix
weight 15 pounds

we were in the vet and gave this pills called phenobarbital theres only 14 pills and it ses give1/2 tablets by mouth twice daily for 14 days does that mean i get 1 single pill and cut it in half and give that for the day and the other piece later on the day ?

epilepsy is a medical condition not usually caused by feeding of human food. only if the food is toxic to their systems could it cause a seizure, but that wouldn't be on a regular basis or would it be considered epilepsy by your vet.

follow your vets advice on how best to control the seizures. and stop feeding human foods. these are for human consumption. you wouldn't eat dog food would you? boiled chicken isn't going to hurt them, but it is lacking in all the nutritional needs of a dog. put the dog food down, do not offer anything but dog food and the dog will eventually eat. the dog knows you will give in and feed it something that it considers to be better. it may be better tasting but it's not better for the dog.

if you wish to prepare foods for your dog ask your vet on what to use so the dog is getting a nutritionally balanced diet.

the human food may not be causing the seizures but it's not helping anything. it can lead to other health issues down the road if it's not a balanced diet. i would reccomend you talk to your vet about what to feed. but you are going to have to be consistent and not give in.

No it is not due to eating human food (watch your spelling.. humane means something totally different). Epilepsy is a common genetic problem with boston terriers. http://www.barkbytes.com/bremed/boston.h... Dogs have similar dietary requirements to humans, so they can get by on our food. To get him onto the dog food, take a spoon or two of canned dog food and mix it into his dry food really well.

My dogs are like this too, so we put meat leftovers from our dinner with their food so it smells good and they eat it. I don't know if that would cause him to have a seizure though, unless he was allergic to something maybe? But to get him to eat his own food, just leave his dog food out, and if he gets hungry enough he'll eat don't worry.

Good luck. =]

It's possible. The things you're feeding him probably don't have the nutrients he needs. So, deficiencies cause those symptoms.

To start him on a new diet, you can mix the dog food with some chicken, and keep mixing more dog food with less chicken until you get to the point of where it's primarily dog food.
If he refuses to eat it, give only that to him. He'll eat it soon enough, but do try to coax with chicken, but don't only give chicken/bread.

No,chicken and bread will not cause epilepsy, but you should try to get him to eat some dog food, even if you have to mix chicken into it ( NO cooked chicken bones!) Epilepsy can be caused by a number of things;liver shunt, brain tumor, injury, etc.Only your vet can tell you,and often they don't know. When a dog has seizures for an unknown reason,it is called "idiopathic epilepsy." The dog will need to go to the vet and be put on anti-seizure medication. If he has bad seizures, and goes into "status epilepticus," it can kill him. So,get to the vet and see what's going on with your pup.Good luck.

Yes,give a half in the morning and one again twelve hours later.I don't understand why the vet only gave you a 14 day supply, though, unless he/she wants to see if the phenobarbitol works. It may make the dog drowsy at first, and thirsty, until his body gets used to it.

I would not think human food would cause the epilepsy. Sense the dog food scare a lot of people have gone to feeding human food to their pets. Once they get to eating human food, dog food doesn't taste as good to them. But if he gets hungry he will eat it. Just don't give him any more human food. [A good dog food has all the nutrients in it] I give human food to my pets but I wait till after they have eaten there own food. This takes time and persistence.

Seizures can come from food reactions, but your dog's are likely just something he inherited - a tendency toward epilepsy. If it is very frequent, he can suffer brain damage over time, but your vet can give him some medicine to control the seizures.

Human food does NOT offer the nutrients dogs need. You could end up with a malnourished dog. (Even an overweight dog can suffer malnutrition without the right diet for a dog.)

We teach our dogs to prefer certain foods. I hate to say it, but your dog will eat dog food if he knows that is the only thing that is going to be offered. If he gets hungry enough he will eat. You are giving in too soon, and teaching him that he can get what he wants if he drives you crazy long enough.

Please end this now. It is so bad for his health. I am not saying you can't ever give him a little treat of human food, but not ever as his normal daily diet. He needs dog-specific food with the proper nutritional content and balance for a DOG's body.

Stand your ground. Give him DOG food. He isn't holding a gun to your head, is he? Take back control and give him what he needs. Be good to him by giving him the best food for him.

One note: make sure his teeth are healthy. If they are hurting him, he won't eat crunchy dog food, but will prefer soft food, and you can't blame him.

Chocolate is poison to a dog's system and can kill a dog.
Don't give macademia nuts, ever.
Don't give grapes - they can also poison him, and to be safe don't give raisins either.
Don't let him chew on a house plant.

Stick to your guns, get serious about his diet, and good luck!

Epilepsy is not caused by human food. Your dog does not eat dog food because he know you will give him some of your food. He needs to eat dog food only so don't give him an excuse not to eat it. Supply fresh water daily.
Dosage of medication as stated. 1 pill daily. 1/2 in morning and 1/2 in evening. Make sure that his dosage is always at the correct levels so keep his vet appointments regularly.

No, the food your feeding isn't causing the seizures. It's a genetic defect and I'm sorry you're having to go through that.

Yes, you cut the pills in half and give one half in the morning and one half in the evening. You can get pill cutters at a pharmacy for about a dollar. Having dogs I've found these to be EXTREMELY handy.

To retrain him to eat his own food, you need to quit giving in to him. He has actually trained you. STOP giving him people food. NONE.

Find a high quality pet food. Measure out the appropriate amount according to the feeding recommendations on the bag. Dived the amount in half, in the Morning, at least 30 minutes after taking his pill, put him in a confined area (blocked off kitchen, bathroom etc) and set his food down. Come back in 15 minutes. If he hasn't eaten it. Pick it up. Do NOT give him anything else for the rest of the day. In the evening 30mins after his pill, confine him again and set the food down after 15 minutes pick it up. Repeat this until he eats his food. He is getting away with being picky, he won't starve himself and eventually will break down and eat. Going a few days without food is not going to hurt him, actually for most dogs it is good to fast for a day or so. If he starts to seem lethargic or tired talk to your vet.

Consult with your vet before changing this routine. It might not be a good idea until you get his medication right and the seizures under control.

If that's the case, you can try tricking him. Mix up his usual dinner, add warm water and a little kibble and let it sit for a few minutes. Then feed. Every few days add more kibble and less people food. When you have him on straight moist kibble reduce the amount of water in the food. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesnt. Never hurts to try.

Either way, his attitude towards eating what you say, when you say can be changed with training. As the "boss" in the house, YOU control when he eats, what he eats and how much he eats. You should be controlling all aspects of his life. This will actually REDUCE stress in dogs.

To do this, have him sit, down, stay, perform some sort of task before setting his food down, being petted, going out, getting on furniture... basically anything. These things should be rewards, not privileges. Do 2 10-15 minute training sessions a day. Even if he already knows the stuff, just having him do it makes a difference.

Being in charge of his behavior will help his eating habits and reduce stress, which in the long run may help his health.

5 and 6 star foods are quality foods. I personally wouldn't feed anything under 5 stars. Food makes a HUGE difference in health.

This gives some insight into good foods and why you should feed high quality foods and avoid low quality foods.

Good luck, I hope you get things worked out.
