I am a fifty year old woman who has had epilepsy since 2. none for 12 yrs. Will they eventually disappear?

The grand mal seizures are controlled with Dilantin and phenobarbital. Sometimes i get that Aura like one is coming on but i have been very lucky for 12 years now. Do you think i will eventually grow out of them? Also, does the brain become less able to learn and memorize because of each seizure? Does it leave you a little damaged?

Darlene.

The course of epileptic seizures is unpredictable. You could have a seizure once and never again or you could, like yourself, have them and go into remission. It is a very good thing they are well controlled with medication for you. It is unpredictable whether you will have them again. Hopefully not, but you presumably could again in later life.

Epileptic seizures do injure the brain, and the longer the seizure or more frequent the seizure episodes, the worse off for the person. Memory and concentration problems and learning disabilities might be a result. However, memory problems for women in middle age are common (with many going to doctors asking for evaluations for early dementia). They may not be actual memory problems, though, but more related to too much multitasking and stressors common to women in that age group.

i agree with the second person who answered...the longer the seizure...the more damage it can do to the brain.

i DO know that some medicine to treat bipolar disorder and schizophrenia can help epilepsy. some scientists believe there is some relation to epileptics and bipolar disorder...which i guess it's true since the meds can help.
i mean...i do know that Dilantin and phenobarbital are anti-seizure medications....but have you heard other kinds?
i have bipolar disorder type I and i take Lamictal. it's i guess can be under the anti-seizure/anti-pyschotic cateogry.

but anyways, Lamictal is a newer anti-seizure medication.
so is Topamax, Lyrica, and Neurontin. but i have heard many people having bad side effects on Topamax for their bipolar disorder...not sure about the other two.
BUT maybe you should talk to your doctor about Lamictal...maybe it can help more.

and as for your question if you grow out of it, some can grow out of it but others are left with it forever.
do some research on it though...i'm sure it will be beneficial

if it didnt occur for last 12 years then i think u have cured.coz my mom has seizure she is 56 still suffering from the disease.doctor say if the attack doesnt comes for 1 years then may be she has cured but it hasnt happened yet......
