Can you tell me if rats have epilepsy, twice my baby rat has foamed at the mouth and struggles to breathe? |
My baby dumbo rat seems to be fitting, she can be fine one day then she goes cold and limp and seems to be struggling to breathe, I have checked in her mouth but no blockages, then its like she is trying to be sick, she tenses up and then this foam comes out of her mouth, she is a bit wobbly on her feet but a day or two later she is fine, and a couple of weeks later it happens again, we have only had her 5 weeks and this is the second time this has happened, if anyone can help I would really appreciate some advice. Rats actually have no gag reflex so it definitely isn't trying to be sick. The only thing I can think of is that is a respiratory infection/disease and you need to take it to the vet immediately. yes. you need to take her to the vet. i believe its possible for them to have epilepsy, im just starting in the veterinary field, but i would call your vet and tell them whats going on and make an emergency appointment, DONT wait, and dont wait for an opening, if one vet says you have to, call another one. especially if it has happened twice in 5 weeks. the rat has microorganism. its a respiration infection!! most rats from pet shops have it. get amoxil atibiotic and give yogurt.good luck!! but i am sure he or she will die. its to advance. sorry!! i love rats!! they are so smart!! and cute!! almost all rats have microplasma!! Call a vet. The best way to find out for sure. You will have to take your little friend in so it can be checked, but be careful taking advice from people who really don't know, your pet's life could depend on what you do. take it to the vets my god, I can only hope that people who post this sorta question are joking. If you are not then take rat to vet. asap |
