How to deal with epilepsy. please help!?

im 14 years old and just got diagnosed 2 months ago with epilepsy. when kids at school started finding out they made fun of me cause i had to take the elevator and some kids even went out of their way to look as if they were having a seizure when i was near them. i wasnt allowed to take the stairs or participate in gym and i want treated fairly by my teachers. how do i deal with this?

When I was in school, kids made fun of me for having epilepsy, too. Kids can be mean, and it's upsetting when you can't do anything about it..especially when they fake like they're having a seizure. It's devastating, I know.
All you can really do right now, is explain to your close friends what is going on, that it's not a joke, and hopefully they won't be mean about it. Just remember, there isn't a "perfect" person out there, everyone has a flaw. Try your best to ignore the mean kids. As you get older, the jokes will gradually stop. Some people just don't think about others' feelings.
I wish you the best of luck, sweetheart. Keep your head up and stay strong.

Talk to your mom and dad about what you are medically allowed to do. If you can do stairs and gym, then have them talk to the school. If you are medically restricted, then you are for a while. That's not about the teachers. It's because the doctors (and you!) need to know that you are on the right medication at the right dose to control your seizures. Sorry, but that's the way it is. Hopefully, once your meds are working, you'll be okay to do most anything.

As for the kids, bleh. Lots at that age will be brats and tease, some because it hides fear, some because they aren't nice. Many just don't know how to deal with the unknown. That's part of the strangeness and stares. Do you look different? Lol, do your eyes glow? They don't know what to expect. Unfortunately, this puts a lot back on you to put other ppl at ease, ya know, remind them that you are a regular person. Have patience. Hang with your friends. Be yourself. Everyone will figure out that you are you, a normal person who just happens to take medication for a transparent illness.

My 14 year old Daughter also has Epilepsy. She takes her medicine every day otherwise she might have a seizure the next day. Sorry to hear about the mean kids at your school. They suck and are just immature. Watching someone have a seizure is real scary but stupid kids will make fun of it anyway. Try to find out what triggers your seizures, stress, being very tired, getting upset or whatever and work to control those things.

i have epilepsy myself and i think its terrible that kids are making fun of u. but they are only 14 and immature and cruel at that age. if ur taking your medication and its working i don't know why u can't participate in gym or even take the stairs. so maybe i don't understand it all completely. i have the disease so i understand it so if u want to talk online on aim or yahoo messenger my screename is TheBTPYoda. if u have aim i rather talk on there.

I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis of epilepsy. Keep in mind, the kids in your school don't know the illness, and they can be cruel for that reason. Also, the unknown scares some kids, thats why they might behave the way they do.

There are different types of epilepsy. Some are known as absanse (staring out into space for a few minutes), partial-complex (start off with small tremble, then gets worse), complex-partial (lot of shaking, then gets smaller), and grand-mal (the whole body shakes, person unaware of the seizure).

People who have epilepsy sometimes say they know when they are going to have a seizure. This is referred to as an epileptic auroa. Some might or might not have it, but as you get older, you will be more aware of it.

With all this said, there are a TON of medication options available for you to control seizure activity. The class of medications your doctor will look into is called 'anti-epileptic' medication, also known as 'mood-stabilizers'. On a side note, they found that people who don't have epilepsy, but have mood/behavior problems benefit from this medicine, as it helps them out to control their moods.

The most popular medication is Tegretol. There are others (keppra, triliptel, gabartil, etc.) that all work equally as well. Your physician would know which medication is 'right' for you, based on the type of seizures you are having.

I work at a hospital, and some of the doctors I work with are diagnosed with epilepsy. When we talk about it, they tell me that after they started their medications, they had not had a single seizure event (some have, but the majority did not). Plenty of people have seizures, but with proper medication, you will be able to control it and continue with your regular activities.

Also, avoid certain conditions. Seizures occur when there is too much stimuli (information) for the brain to handle. When a person is near a strobe light, the constant on/off flashes sometimes confuse the brain, while it is working on handling everything else you see/hear. So it would be important for you to avoid strobe lights.

Best of luck.
