What is Focal Epilepsy?

Would like to know if anyone can explained this. Rec'd test result that stated, "This is an abnormal awake and drowsy electroencephalogram due to the presence of epileptiform discharges most noted in the T4 or temporal and parietal area suggested focal epilepsy, clinical correlation advised."

Focal Epilepsy (also called partial epilepsy) is a seizure disorder in which seizures are preceded by an isolated disturbance of a cerebral function. Such disturbances may include:

-A twitching of a part of the body such as a limb

-A deceptive or illusory sensation or feeling

-Some other mental disturbance

The cause of the isolated disturbances results from the electrical signals that cause the seizure emanating from a specific part of the brain.

To be very general about all of this, there are 2 types of epilepsy, Partial and Genereralized. Partial means the hyperactive part of the brain is localized to a certain area. In other words, its is focal. This means that one half of the brain is affected while the other side is not. Clinically this means that there is a chance that the person having a Partial (focal) seizure may actually be aware what is happening and can describe it afterwards. Generalized means the whole brain is involved in the seizure. The tricky thing is, Partial (focal) seizures may progress to Generalized seizures. This is a really brief explanation but I think answers your question
