My dog has been diagnosed with epilepsy, anyone have any experience with this? |
my border collie has epilelpsy, i know all the facts, what to do, medication etc. but id like to know about personal experiences from ppl that have experienced this with their dogs, instead of hearing cold hard facts and horror stories from my vet. things such as life span and other problems that can occur. Yes our friends lab had its first epileptic fit at christmas, and as he came out of the fit he attacked our friend and tor a 3 inch gash in his lower lip, this apparently is quite common for a dog to attack as it comes round as it is disorientated and distressed. Our friend now knows when his dog is about to fit as he starts to drool and wets himself, on the orders of the vet they leave the dog in a room on his own until the fit has passed and they can hear the dog moving around normally. He is now on treatment with anti epileptic drugs(sorry cant remember the name) and is doing well with no fits for the past 3 months. If the medication hadn't had an effect they would have wanted to do a CT scan coasting 拢1500 at Bristol but as of yet they are happy with the drug treatment. He has told us about this in length as he wanted it clear that our children as well as ourselves should make sure we are clear of Oscar if it happens again, although all his fits have been at night which is also quite usual because a fit tends to happen when the dog is relaxed. As for life quality and life span our friend has been told by his vet that they should both be normal as many many dogs suffer this condition and live long and useful lives. Our friend loves his dog very much and would never let Oscar suffer so I believe this is a condition that can be managed without causing the dog any difficulties. Oscar is only 18 months old my labrador has epilepsy. .its first time i heard about it but try links below maybe they will help answer some of your questions and i hope your dog gets better good luck love hi. |
