My husband has epilepsy, how can i explain a seizure to my four year old? |
my husband was diagnosed with epilepsy about a month ago and just recently my four year old daurghter has had some questions about her father's grand mal seizures. how can i explain seizures to my daurghter? I'd say something like: I use to work with patients that had grand mal seizures and it is very traumatic to the victim and the persons who witness it. Time helps and the more you do what is required for you to do it becomes routine. That does not take away from the responsibility of explaining things to a very young witness. Innocense and youth appreciate the truth because they have not yet been tainted by this world of falsehood. Be truthfull but not brutal tell it like it is. Explain what is happening and what you are doing and what should not be done. Just tell it like it is and be the mother and wife that your are. First, assure her that they're not life threatening but, tell her the truth about them and talk to her on her level. Just tell her that there's something wrong with "Daddy's" brain and in the way it sends out signals sometimes and when that happens, he has what is called a seizure. Reassure her that there are medicines that can help him to not have these episodes very often and reassure her that he is going to be around for a long, long time. Just be sure to make it a light hearted talk so that you don't say something to frighten her. Try explaining that like when they get mad and yell and stomp feet and fists, daddys brain is doing the same thing and that the doctors will make it stop after a while if Daddy is a good boy and takes HIs medicine, meant only FOR HIM. Gotta think like a four year old to explain to a four year old. There are several children's books out there that help explain epilepsy to a child in simple terms. Its better to talk openly with your child and tell her the truth. It will be easier for her to understand once she knows that he can't help it. I would do some research on the children's books though because those are always easier. Good luck. say in his brain theres a malfunction and a brain signal was misread and victim or person cant control themsleves |
