Each person reacts differently to medicines and so your child will not necessarily suffer from every side effect mentioned and may not experience any side effects. If you are concerned, please ask your doctor, nurse or pharmacist on the contact number below.

Sodium Valproate is a fairly safe medicine, which has been used widely in both children and adults with epilepsy for many years.

It may initially cause some nausea, vomiting, tremor (shakiness) and unsteadiness.
Your child may develop a severe rash if taking Lamotrigine along with Sodium Valproate. If this occurs medical advice should be sought immediately.
There can be weight gain, tiredness and behavioural changes.
Liver damage can occur especially in children less than three years old who are receiving multiple anti-epilepsy medicines and who may have pre-existing metabolic or neurological problems. This is usually seen in the first six months of treatment.
If your child experiences repeated vomiting, extreme tiredness, weakness, loss of appetite or jaundice (yellowing of the skin), inform your doctor immediately.
Sodium Valproate can also produce hormonal abnormalities, which include irregular menstrual periods and polycystic ovaries, temporary hair loss and a tendency to bleeding and bruising.
Rarely, Sodium Valproate can cause loss of learning ability, which is reversible on stopping the drug.

Talk to your doctor about side effects.
Actually, your pharmacist may be more helpful and have more information immediately available.
In fact, the pharmacy should have given you a printout of info on the drug precautions, actions, side effects.
