Epilepsy in dogs.?

It's kind of a long story.
My dog had bad seizures, all the time.
Things got very hard on my family, and we surrendered him to the golden rescue in November, 2007.
My mom called to check on him once a week, and he was stuck in a vets office for a few months before he was healthy enough to leave.
Recently, he was put to sleep.
I miss him everyday.

If your pet had/has this, please tell:
The kind of pet
What caused it (if you know)
& how you handled it.

I had a golden & we think it was caused by a shot from the vet.

I had a cocker spaniel who had a few seizures. She was never diagnosed with epilepsy, but we took her to the vet every time she had a seizure, which was only about 2 times a year. It was so scary and sad when she had one. She started having them when she was about 4 years old and lived until she was 11. I know that all dogs are different and all cases are different.

My sister's dog started having a seizure at an older age (about 9 years old). It was one time, but they wouldn't stop. He was taken to the vet and the vet gave him medication to stop the seizures. But as soon as they stopped the meds, the seizures would fire up again and not stop without meds. The decision to put him down had to be made. There was no other choice. And the worse part about it was that my sister and her family were on vacation. They didn't even get to say good-bye. He had been at the kennel and they had to make the decision over the phone to their vet. Very sad.

I'm so sorry you have to feel this way. Dogs are definitely part of the family and it is always sad when your dog passes. Just keep him in your heart.

Hello my name is anna self taught nutritionist

These Vitamin and or MIneral deficiences can cause seizure in both dogs and cats

You can get these from the Vet. or on line

a. Vitamin B6 Pyrioxidine
b. Vitamin B1 Thiamine
c. Vitamin C
Minerals Magneiusm and Calcium balanced.

the no. 1 nutrient for this is Vit. B6 Pyroxidine you can ask Vet for a multi vitamin mineral forumal or buy at pet store

ANYONE WHO HAS A DOG OR CAT WITH EPILEPSY SHOULD TRY the Vits.; simply by adding few drops liquid vits. to feed

Magneisum is very effective at calming pets and is also a natural laxative which is good; helps to expel worms and parasites

Just worms alone can cause puppy seizures

The dog I grew up with had epilepsy, he was a Brittany Spaniel. We were told that he may have developed because he bred too closely within his genetic line. Basically, it was inherited. I don't think that vet's have much more of an idea why animals develop it than doctors know why people develop epilepsy.
I am very sorry to hear that your dog had it so severely, as my dog grew older it seemed that he had large seizures less frequently. Eventually my dog died after running away and getting into something that made him very ill, and we had to put him to sleep.
I miss Rusty still, he died when I was a teen, you will feel better eventually. Consider adopting another dog, there are so many wonderful dogs that will help you feel better. They never take the place of your dog that died, but it helps you stay in the present.

my parents have a 4 yr old black lab who recently had a seizure and we called the vet, had him come out and he said that seizures are very common in large breed dogs. alot have seizures when they are about 3 -5 yrs old because of an overactive hyper something in their brain(he used be vet words). today, our guy is fine and hasn't had another seizure since. it was the scariest thing that has ever happened to me!

i am so sorry you lost your golden! my boyfriend and i have one and he is the light of our lives. they are GREAT dogs! i am soo sorry. :(

We had a female German Shepherd a very long time ago who was epileptic and our vet back then told us it was a genetic thing--sort of the way it passes along in humans. She was on meds nearly every day--it got to the point that when we saw the pupils in her eyes grow really large, even she would know a seizure was coming on and would sit down near where we kept her pills!

She died of old age, in her sleep--not from a seizure. Know how hard it is to say goodbye no matter how it happens.

I have been lucky that I havent had to deal with epilepsy.

Its ussually heriditary tho.. it may not always show up until later years.

Exposure to toxins, and injuries can also cause seizures.
