Epilepsy in dogs.? |
It's kind of a long story. I had a cocker spaniel who had a few seizures. She was never diagnosed with epilepsy, but we took her to the vet every time she had a seizure, which was only about 2 times a year. It was so scary and sad when she had one. She started having them when she was about 4 years old and lived until she was 11. I know that all dogs are different and all cases are different. Hello my name is anna self taught nutritionist The dog I grew up with had epilepsy, he was a Brittany Spaniel. We were told that he may have developed because he bred too closely within his genetic line. Basically, it was inherited. I don't think that vet's have much more of an idea why animals develop it than doctors know why people develop epilepsy. my parents have a 4 yr old black lab who recently had a seizure and we called the vet, had him come out and he said that seizures are very common in large breed dogs. alot have seizures when they are about 3 -5 yrs old because of an overactive hyper something in their brain(he used be vet words). today, our guy is fine and hasn't had another seizure since. it was the scariest thing that has ever happened to me! We had a female German Shepherd a very long time ago who was epileptic and our vet back then told us it was a genetic thing--sort of the way it passes along in humans. She was on meds nearly every day--it got to the point that when we saw the pupils in her eyes grow really large, even she would know a seizure was coming on and would sit down near where we kept her pills! I have been lucky that I havent had to deal with epilepsy. |
